Rufus Shinra (in Japanese: ルーファウス神羅, Rūfausu Shinra) is the central antagonist of Final Fantasy VII and a major antagonist in its 2020 remake. He also appears in Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII- and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and is mentioned in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-.
In Japanese, he is voiced by Tōru Ōkawa in all appearances. In English, he is voiced by Wally Wingert in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Josh Bowman in Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Biography
The sole legitimate son of President Shinra, Rufus Shinra was the Vice President and heir to the Shinra Electric Power Company. After the death of his father at the hands of Sephiroth, Rufus became the new President of Shinra Inc.. In battle, Shinra wielded a pair of firearms and was accompanied by a military canine named Darkstar that followed his every command unquestionably.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Rufus Shinra appears in a spirit (alongside the Turks) introduced in Sephiroth's DLC spirit board. An Ace-level Support-type spirit, it grants the user a "trade-off ability" on use. In their spirit battle, the player must fight one Mii Brawler, one Mii Swordfighter, two Mii Gunners, and one Robin on the Battlefield form of Fourside, with explosive items spawning often and Robin starting off the fight with a Steel Diver.
Trivia
- The name "Shinra" was, according to game director Yoshinori Kitase, derived from the Japanese word for "myth" (神話, shinwa) as it reflected Shinra's desire to control everything and become god. "Rufus" was a name originating from Latin which roughly translated to "red-haired".
