The Ruin are the main enemies in the 2011 horror-action video game Alice: Madness Returns, the sequel to 2000's American McGee's Alice.
History[]
Prior to the main events of Alice: Madness Returns, Ruin were created when Dr. Angus Bumby, also known by his Wonderland counterpart the Dollmaker, corrupted Alice Lindell's mind during his therapy session with her. After awhile the Ruins made there way to Wonderland and starting causing havoc all across the land. In doing so they signified the arrival of monstrous Dollmaker to Wonderland.
The Ruin's main purpose and objective in Alice: Madness Returns is to aid the Dollmaker in his take over of Wonderland try and stop Alice from saving Wonderland doing anything possible to prevent her success. They do this by blocking doorways, buttons, or other important items. They also gang up on Alice to overwhelm her often doing so in large groups. They're also willing to team up with other hostiles creatures native to Wonderland to kill Alice.
Appearances[]
All of the Ruins are creatures made up mostly of a black, oil–like substance which is called ruin. This is where they get there name from. This substance is very acidic and hurts anyone who comes into contact with it. The substance makes up most of the Ruins body. The rest of their bodies not including the Slithering Ruin variation are covered in baby doll masks and limbs and have steam-machinery on their bodies.
- Insidious Ruin: They are composed mainly of ruin and have doll heads and engines which pump out a small amount of black smog.
- Drifting Ruin: Drifting Ruin are mainly composed of Ruin and doll parts. Their whole body is the Ruin itself with a doll head and four doll arms.
- Menacing Ruin: They have three doll faces, two arms that protect them, and nozzles with bits of other train debris sticking out from the tops of their beings. They are large, misshapen, and have three legs made of Ruin.
- Colossal Ruin: Is made up of Ruin, machinery, and doll heads and arms. Its huge doll head is located behind its machinery and will appear once the Ruin will use its flamethrower attack, while smaller doll heads appear around its body. Four doll arms act as its feet, and another four doll arms are around its mouth.
- Slithering Ruin: Slithering Ruins are long but small black sludges completely made of Ruin and are similar to leeches.
Trivia[]
- According to The Art of Alice: Madness Returns, the Ruin are inspired by the character No–Face from the 2001 Japanese animated film Spirited Away.
- Each Ruin originally acted as a foil to one of Alice's weapons.
- Defeating 100 Ruin enemies results in the achievement/trophy called "No quarter! No Mercy!
- Slithering Ruin may have been taken from Alice's repressed memories of leeches being used on her in Rutledge Asylum, as they hold many similar physical and personal similarities.
