~ Rumi being delusional. |
Rumi Hidaka is the main antagonist of the 1997 psychological thriller anime film Perfect Blue.
She is voiced by Rica Matsumoto in the Japanese version and by Wendee Lee in the dub.
Biography[]
She is the manager of pop-idol Mima. When Mima quit singing and became an actress, Rumi was so distraught that she started to imagine, she herself was Mima and the real Mima was a fake. As Mima, Rumi also created an online website, which claimed that Mima was tired of her new career change and that she was sick of the real Mima "impersonating" her. Rumi also ordered a crazy fan of Mima called Me-Mania to kill several creators, involved with the TV show Mima was casted in. In these murders, Rumi believed that she was avenging Mima from perverted film creators who forced her to engage in sadistic rape scenes. She also decorated her apartment to look exactly like Mima's.
When she ordered the crazy fan to kill Mima, while impersonating as Mima herself, and he failed, Rumi took Mima to her apartment. There she attacked her and tried to murder her. She chased her through the city only to get hit by a driving truck. She was then taken to a psychiatric ward, where she frequently switches between "Rumi" and "Mima".
Appearance[]
Rumi is a somewhat overweight and has very short brown hair. Her eyes are also notably small and far apart from each other. She casually wears a sweater and to work, she dresses up in a dark blue suit.
Personality[]
Rumi initially appears as very kind and caring. She also knows quite a lot about technology. She often worries about Mima and fears that she might push herself too hard. Seeing Mima in trouble, really affects her as well.
After she developed a second "Mima"-personality, Rumi acted very sweet and cutesy, like Mima usually acts. However, she is also taunting and insulting the real Mima and is completely delusional about her own identity. She acts devious and violent and eventually becomes insane.
Trivia[]
- Her name could hold multiple meanings in the context of the story:
- R U Mi (Are you me?), since she starts to imagine herself being someone else.
- Room-Me, the online website she created is called Mima's Room, and she sees it as her own "room".
