Russell is a minor antagonist in So Long, and Thanks For all the Fish.
Nature[]
He is the brother of Fenchurch and is very uncaring towards her. Russell is a name, that to Arthur, conjures up images of mustached burly men who wear tuxedos with frilly sleeves and have blow-dried hair. Russell has all of these attributes. Arthur Dent meets Russell when he has hitch hiked from the other end of the Horsehead Nebula, and Arthur is very exhausted and jet lagged, and shocked to find Earth is still existing because he saw it blown up.
Biography[]
Arthur dislikes Russell at first sight, and Russell similarly hates Arthur. He refuses to say anything about Fenchurch except that she's mad. Russell is on the way back from the hospital where she thought she was a hedgehog. Russell is trying to put Arthur off liking his sister. He also rants about how he'd rather that his own sister was locked away in a mental hospital, because at least then Russell would be able to pursue his life's pursuits. Whereas most men would be sympathetic towards family with ill health and be discreet, Russell is very rude to his sister, patronising and uncaring. He goes so far as to boast about how many mess-ups Fenchurch had growing up with a mental health problem. He even threatens to beat up Arthur at one point (perhaps rightly so because Arthur was being a little interfering but still, Russell was always dramatic).
Like all egocentric bullies, Russell is a hypocrite. For instance he calls Arthur a crazy madman but he himself spends much of his time listening to crazy conspiracy theories (he believed the Vogon ships were a government produced hallucination, and he actually tried suing the CIA). To make matters worse, the government seem to have evidence to prove the conspiracy, and Russell proudly demonstrates this to make Arthur look like a crazy conspiracist rather than Russell.
As poor Arthur had been voyaging round the Galaxy for seven years, he had not the slightest idea what the CIA were up to on Earth, nor, to be fair, did Arthur even believe Earth existed no more because he believed he'd seen it blown up. Finally, the car brakes and Russell snaps at Arthur for clutching his own handbrake, refusing to take Arthur any further than his village.
Impact on Arthur[]
All in all, Russell is not a very good welcome to Arthur after ten years of not having human contact.
