Russell Smith is the overarching antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode “Perennials”. Smith is a dead serial killer of prostitutes inspiring Willie Kestler into his own killing spree, believing he was Smith’s reincarnation.
He was portrayed by Patrick Holder.
Biography[]
Smith was a killer of eight young women and girls in prostitution in Alabama, between 1967 and 1987. Every women was killed in the exact same fashion, forcing them to gagged with sticks and lay on their stomachs before he hammered ice picks into their brains while standing over them. On January 19, 1988, Smith started a shootout with policeman and was mortally wounded. He was rushed to a hospital, in a bed adjacent to a woman named Beverly Kessler. In the same instance she gave birth to her son Willie, Smith died when he couldn’t be resuscitated. Beverly’s grandfather Bill abused Kestler all his life over his hatred of the boy, believing the coincidence to be an important connection. Kestler grew to be interested in reincarnation when he heard the truth and also read up on Smith’s crimes, then became paranoid a reincarnation of one of Smith’s victims was out to kill him after a car accident. Kestler started his own killing spree, originally evoking Smith’s murders, but become in more violent as he was desperate to protect himself from the mostly like people who were “reincarnated from” the women Smith butchered. Kestler eventually died at the end of his spree.

- Smith is inspired by Peter Sutcliffe, a.k.a. “The Yorkshire Ripper”, a British serial killer of women in prostitution who were mauled to death with hammers, icepicks, and other weapons. Sutcliffe also inspired another serial killer, Stephen Griffiths, a.k.a. “The Crossbow Cannibal”, a murder of three more women in prostitution.
- Smith is also inspired by Abel Plenkov, a.k.a. “The Riverton Ripper”, a dead serial killer who was reincarnated into a teenager murdering several of his peers.
