The Russian Demogorgon is a minor antagonist in Season 3 and a returning antagonist in Season 4 of Stranger Things.

It was a sixth stage Demogorgon that was captured by the Soviets in the Kamchatka gulag, where it was used to murder prisoners.

Biography[]

Background[]

The Demogorgon existed was created within the Upside Down when Henry Creel arrived there. They were controlled by a Hive Mind with a large amount of shadow, alien particles in a stormy cloud that would eventually become the Mind Flayer under Vecna's control. Before that, it is unknown if the Demogorgons are already a hostile species, as is implied by the first Demogorgon seen by Henry during his Upside Down exploration that they only become homicidal under Vecna's command.

At some point, the creature and other specimen like it were captured by the Soviets, and was taken to the Kamchatka gulag to feed on prisoners.

Season Three[]

The Russian Demogorgon makes it first appearance in the season finale, being released to kill a political prisoner that the Soviet soldiers take from his cell.

Season Four[]

In 1986, the Russian Demogorgon has become a myth among the prisoners as the Soviets have increased their executions. Having enough of the prisoners, Warden Melnikov decides to send them into an arena where the Demogorgon will kill them. The creature does so, ruthlessly murdering the prisoners except for Jim Hopper and Enzo, whom manage to escape by using fire and having Joyce Byers open the doors. Despite this, the Demogorgon is able to pry the doors open briefly before Hopper sends his spear into its mouth, hurting it long enough for them to escape.

The Demogorgon then escapes the arena and proceeds to kill the Soviet officers in the gulag, and is later assisted by the Demodogs after they are reawakened by the Mind Flayer. It later confronts Hopper and Joyce, but is heavily weakened by Murray Bauman with a flamethrower. Hopper then attacks the feral monster with a sword, decapitating it with a single swing. As a result of the Demogorgon's death alongside the Demodogs, the portion of the Mind Flayer was destroyed.

Trivia[]

  • It's unknown if the Russian Demogorgon can open portals like the Hawkins creature. If it does possess this power, it is unknown why the Demogorgon simply used this power to open a portal and escape. It is possible that this Demogorgon is still a juvenile and does not yet have the ability to produce portals like the Hawkins Demogorgon. It is also possible that since the Demogorgon has a steady food supply at the prison; the Soviets feeding political prisoners to it, that the Demogorgon simply chooses not to leave the prison due to having such readily access to food.
  • It's also unknown how the Russians achieved this Demogorgon, since the species was likely extinct at the end of season 2, when all the Demodogs died when Eleven closed the gate and the first Demogorgon to appears in Hawkins was killed by her in season 1. There's some possibilities to explain it:
    • Its more likely that not all the 1984's Demodogs went to the Hawkins lab and remained in the Upside Down when the portal was closed, killing the ones who were in Hawkins lab.
    • There's also the possibility that the missing Demodog from Joyce's fridge, who was likely taken by military authorities, was taken by the Soviets and frozen until eventually revived it in Kamchatka, growing up in that Demogorgon, as season 4 also showed they take (also unknown how) a large piece of the Mind Flayer's shadow.
    • It's likely that there are many more demodogs and demogorgons in the upside down that just the ones sent to Hawkins Lab.
  • The other Demodogs seen in the prison are likely to be its offspring.
