Ruth Langmore is the tritagonist of the Netflix crime series Ozark.
She was portrayed by Julia Garner.
Biography[]
A local girl, Ruth lived in a trailer with her uncles Boyd and Russ Langmore and her cousins Wyatt and Three. They were small time criminals who performed scams. After they stole $3 million from Marty Byrde, a financial advisor serving as a money launderer for the Navarro drug cartel, Marty confronted them and demanded they return it to him, which they reluctantly obliged.
Ruth decides to scam Marty and forces him to help her get a job at the Lickety Splitz. After growing fond of him, she murders her uncle by rigging the dock to his home to electrocute him.
Ruth's father Cade Langmore later returns from prison and Marty's wife Wendy has him killed for attacking Charlotte. Ruth falls in love with Wendy's troubled, bipolar brother Ben and reveals to him that the Byrdes work with the Navarro drug cartel. Ben confronts cartel lawyer Helen Pierce, who orders him killed. Ruth and Wendy attempt to smuggle him to Memphis, but Wendy abandons him in order to protect her and Marty's kids, Charlotte and Jonah, leading to Ben's death and Ruth breaking ties with the family.
Ruth then starts working with Darlene Snell, a local drug boss who ends up marrying Wyatt. Omar Navarro's nephew Javier Elizonndro ends up killing both Darlene and Wyatt. Ruth avenges Wyatt by killing Javier as he meets with the elder Byrdes and pharmaceutical CEO Clare Shaw.
Ruth then wipes her criminal record clean and buys out Marty's riverboat casino, the Missouri Belle, rendering him unable to raise enough money to pay Navarro's lieutenants. Marty and Wendy then conspire with Navarro's sister Camila Elizonndro to overthrow him. Marty later coerces Ruth into threatening Wendy's father Nathan Davis into relinquishing custody of Charlotte and Jonah.
Camila intimidates Shaw into confessing that Ruth killed Javier, threatening to kill Charlotte and Jonah if Marty and Wendy let Ruth escape, Camila confronts Ruth outside her house. Ruth admits to the murder and remains unrepentant, Camila then shoots and kills her.
