Ruth Lessing is the main antagonist of Agatha Christie's 1944 mystery novel Sparkling Cyanide. She is the George Barton's secretary.
Biography[]
A year before the events described, in November, seven people gathered at the Luxembourg restaurant for lunch. One of them, Rosemary Barton, died right at the table. As it turned out later, she poisoned herself with potassium cyanide, and the cause of suicide was depression. Her husband receives an anonymous letter, which claims that Rosemary was murdered, and George decides to find out everything to the end. He invites all the participants of that ill-fated lunch to the same restaurant. He asks an actress, amazingly similar to his late wife, to play her role. However, the actress never showed up, and George dies from the same cyanide, poured into a glass. His death would also be considered a suicide, if not for George's friend, Colonel Race, and secret police agent Anthony Brown. They conducted an investigation and found out that George died by accident. Instead, they wanted to kill his wife's sister Iris Marl. Ruth Lessing was behind it. She wanted the sisters' property to be inherited by their aunt, and for their son to then be able to receive this money.
