Ruth and Dylan are the minor antagonists of The Mentalist TV-show. They are the copycats of the serial killer Red John, who is the main antagonist of this TV-show. Ruth was played by Carrie Finklea and Dylan was played by Stephen Sowan.
Biography[]
The episode begins with Wayne Rigsby and Grace van Pelt (Patrick Jane's friends from the police) receiving a video in which someone kills a young girl. A search begins immediately. Soon the girl's body is really found in one of the houses. Everything is staged as if the murder was committed by Red John, the maniac who killed Patrick's family. But Patrick is unsure that it was Red John who killed the girl. The identity of the deceased is also established. This is a student, Marley Sparrow. The police question the friends of the murdered woman. Her closest friend Ruth and Ruth's boyfriend Dylan claim that they saw Marley talking to a police officer named Grady Ship and was interested in serial killers (in particular, Red John). However, no police department confirms that they have an employee named Grady Ship. This was the name of a cannibal convicted and imprisoned in the same prison as Orville Tanner, an accomplice of Red John (Orville's son, Dumars, appeared on screen and tried to kill Patrick and Teresa Lisbon, and Patrick killed him in self-defense). While Patrick is discussing the current investigation with his friends, he sees the news on TV. During the program, Patrick's old friend Christina Frye asks Red John to redeem himself. Patrick gives Christina a dressing down, claiming that she did exactly what once cost Patrick's family their lives. Christina retorts that Patrick insulted Red John, and she addressed him correctly. But soon the host of that program is killed. It is implied that Red John did it. Soon Christina goes missing, although the police were following her. Patrick continues the investigation. It soon turns out that a certain Wesley Blankfein was following the murdered student Marley. He was also a student. However, it is not possible to interrogate Wesley. He is missing. His mother is missing too. Patrick receives multiple photos of Wesley and discovers a cafe on one of them. He suggests that his friends find this cafe. Although there are many places of this cafe, Patrick points out that there are other public places nearby. Soon, Patrick himself goes there. He tells Teresa Lisbon that he is already near the cafe, but he is attacked. He comes to in a completely different place. Wesley is standing in front of him and wants to kill him, praising Red John. However, Patrick very quickly figures out that it was not Red John who was behind Wesley, but Ruth and Dylan. Patrick's guess is very quickly confirmed. Ruth and Dylan want to make a horror movie. That is why they killed Marley. They kidnapped Wesley's mother so that he would kill for them. Despite Patrick's attempts to convince him, Wesley still decides to attack him with a knife, but at that moment Ruth and Dylan are killed by Red John, who arrived in time. He scolds them for such a "cheap" (as he put it) imitation of his work. However, Red John spares Wesley, since he did not act of his own free will, and limits himself to inflicting a light wound on him. After this, Red John approaches Patrick and recites the first quatrain of Blake's poem "Tyger, Tiger" (which will play a role later), after which he hints that Christina Frye is still alive. Red John leaves. Later, Patrick is shown being rescued (apparently, someone called the police, and there was no one else to do it except Red John).
