Ryan Kowlska is the secondary antagonist in the 2025 Netflix crime drama miniseries Adolescence.
He is a friend and classmate of Jamie Miller, who was culprit behind the murder of Katie Leonard. As the series progresses, it is revealed that Ryan also played a role in the murder, being the one who supplied Jamie with the knife he used to kill Katie.
He was played by Kaine Davis.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Ryan supposedly comes from a home where his parents are indifferent to the choices he makes, as implied by him when he tells Tommy that his parents didn't really seem to care about the police investigation. Ryan made friends with Jamie roughly one year before the events of the show.
Giving Jamie the Knife[]
Sometime after Jamie was rejected by Katie, and after his radicalization towards misogyny, he got together with his friends, and Ryan gave him a knife he could use to scare Katie with. However, Jamie's confrontation with Katie escalated, and he ended up stabbing her seven times, where she bled to death in the street. It is unknown what happened to the knife after Jamie killed Katie.
3 Days Later[]
After three days, post-Jamie's arrest, police visited Jamie's school, Bruntwood Academy, hoping to question some of Jamie and Katie's classmates in order to get some answers. During this time, Ryan spoke to Tommy, worried about Jamie, before being beaten up by Jade, Katie's best friend, and being sent to the nurse. Ryan was questioned while at the nurse, but left before the questioning was done. When the police attempted to speak with him again, he fled the school, before DI Luke Bascombe caught up with him and demanded answers. At first, Ryan continued to deny knowing anything, before finally giving in and revealing that the knife that Jamie used was his. Ryan was then arrested on conspiracy to commit murder.
