Ryan Industries are major antagonists in the BioShock series. It is a business conglomerate founded by Andrew Ryan to finance the construction of Rapture. Although the city is built on free market and anti-government laws, Ryan Industries is effectively the governing body of Rapture from the very beginning. They are also the business and political competitors of Fontaine Futuristics and the Rapture Family respectively.
History[]
As Andrew Ryan set to work on constructing the underwater city of Rapture, a place where he could realize his dream of a free market unrestricted by "big government", he merged all his business ventures into a single front to oversee Rapture's construction, a company named "Ryan Industries".
In the early days of Rapture after its completion, Ryan Industries was the most powerful business within Rapture, controlling the underwater city's infrastructure and charging all its other residents for Rapture's services. Ryan Industries acted as a tent to all of Ryan's other businesses within Rapture, which included the private security company "Ryan Security", a radio station for Ryan and the other businesses in Rapture to advertise their products known as "Rapture Radio", along with numerous endeavors into many other industries.
One industry which Ryan initially overlooked however was the market for ADAM, a chemical substance discovered by Brigid Tenenbaum which could rewrite genetic code. While Ryan at first dismissed the research, his rival Frank Fontaine offered his support and took advantage of potential the substance posed. Fontaine, who had already risen to power by operating numerous criminal enterprises which addressed the gaps in Rapture's society Ryan had failed too, such as smuggled goods from the surface, soon rose to rival Ryan with his company Fontaine Futuristics serving as a challenger to Ryan's own Ryan Industries. Fontaine set up the "Little Sister's Orphanage" which, while operating as a home for little girls who were without parents in Rapture, was really a front to gather them to have ADAM implanted in their body, turning them into biological factories for the substance.
Eventually, Ryan took action against Fontaine's criminal activities and, during an operation to shut down Fontaine's smuggling ring, Fontaine seemingly perished. Following Fontaine's supposed demise, Ryan Industries annexed Fontaine Futuristics, a move which alienated much of Ryan's supporters due to resembling the "big government" regulation he had formed Rapture get away from. While shutting down Fontaine's orphanages, Ryan kept the Little Sisters to continue producing ADAM and set up the "Little Wonders Educational Facility" to take their place in gathering subjects and continuing research on ADAM.
Following a revolt on New Year's Day 1959 by supporters of Atlas, Rapture descended into a violent civil war between Ryan's company and Atlas and his followers, one which ultimately saw the final downfall of Ryan and his vision for Rapture.
