~ Rykard facing the Tarnished. |
Praetor Rykard, also known as the Lord of Blasphemy and the God-Devouring Serpent, is a major antagonist and optional boss fight in the 2022 dark fantasy action role-playing video game Elden Ring. He is one of the demigod children of Radagon and Queen Rennala of the Full Moon. During the Shattering, Rykard's desire for immortality led to him feeding himself to the God-Devouring Serpent.
Rykard retreated into the depths of his home, the Volcano Manor, where he devoured the numerous warriors sent to challenge him. With each life consumed, the serpentine form of the Lord of Blasphemy grew more powerful. Rykard's quest for power was eventually halted, however, when a Tarnished warrior slew him in combat.
He was voiced by Simon Gregor.
Personality[]
Rykard was once a noble man filled with ambition since he was a child. Like his sister, Ranni, he was very deviant of the Golden Order and sought out to overthrow them, along with the Erdtree, believing that no one should have to live under their will. Unlike most of the other demigods, however, he did not seek out for the other Great Runes and was instead content with his Great Rune. His ambitions inspired many followers, who saw his ambitions as good and swore their allegiance to him and his cause, as a result.
However, those very ambitions would cost his sanity when he ended up being devoured by the God-Devouring Serpent. Upon merging with the God-Devouring Serpent, his ambitions became a borderline obsession of greed and hunger, in which he desired nothing more than power and immortality. Rykard believed that, by continuously devouring his champions and others alike, they would become a part of his "family" and help extend his life for all eternity. Due to the many torture devices he has created and are found within the basement of the Volcano Manor, it's implied that he likes to torment his victims.
In spite of the monster he's become, his gift for his consort, Tanith, suggested that he genuinely loved her and cared for her well-being, as well as for their adopted daughter, Rya, as the gift was intended protect Rya from learning the horrible truth of her birth.
