In my first life, I was a moderate eater. I fought worthy opponents... and met a good woman... so I don't particularly have any regrets. But I can't stand this vague thirst... Okkotsu. And no one... understands why I can't get no satisfaction. These cigarettes... have a sweet aftertaste. My life... never had dessert.
~ Ishigori speaking about his search for fulfilment.

Ryu Ishigori is a supporting antagonist in the 2018 supernatural action manga series Jujutsu Kaisen. He is a sorcerer from four hundred years ago that was incarnated into a handsome man by the curse user Kenjaku to participate in the jujutsu battle royale known as the Culling Game. Having never been satisfied in life despite the numerous pleasures he experienced, he later seeks to find a sense of fulfilment.

Biography[]

First Life[]

Ryu Ishigori was a powerful sorcerer whose innate technique, "Cursed Energy Discharge," allowed him to project destructive blasts of cursed energy. He lived during the 17th century, and hailed from the Date Domain in the Mutsu Province of Japan. His innate technique was so destructive that it was believed he possessed the highest recorded cursed energy output in history. He led a full life, having loved a good woman and fought worthy opponents.

Finding Fulfilment[]

On November 12 2018, the status quo in the Sendai Colony was shaken when Dhruv was abruptly killed by a newcomer. Ishigori learned from Kogane that the one responsible was named Yuta Okkotsu, and that he had thirty-five points. He watched from afar as Kurourushi faced Okkotsu, and was impressed with the level of cursed energy and cursed energy output the new sorcerer displayed. Kurourushi was able to fatally wound Okkotsu and, though to the surprise of Ishigori the sorcerer was able to use reverse cursed energy to heal his wounds and burn the cursed spirit from the inside out. Both Dhruv and Kurourushi had fallen.

The next to try their luck was Uro, who was able to fight evenly with Okkotsu thanks to her cursed technique. Part of the way through Okkotsu and Uro's fight, Ishigori decided to join and fired a Granite Blast from his vantage point that lightly damaged Okkotsu. Okkotsu began sprinting towards Ishigori, who responded by firing a volley of small beams. Ishigori eventually scored an attack that he believed had hit its mark, though once the smoke dissipated from the blast Okkotsu was gone. Okkotsu suddenly appeared behind Ishigori, as he had used the smoke as an opportunity to enter an underground passage and get behind him.

Ishigori briefly explained his reason for incarnating to Okkotsu, before attacking him in close quarters. As their battle raged on, Ishigori found Okkotsu an exhilarating opponent and wondered if he could be the one to finally give him fulfilment. He fired a Granite Blast at Okkotsu, who blocked it with his bare hand and brutally punched Ishigori into the ground. Uro then reappeared and attacked Okkotsu, which annoyed Ishigori. He fired his cursed technique at her, though she used her own technique to deflect it back at him. Ishigori had never been hit by his own attack before, and couldn't help but marvel at how powerful it was.

He took a moment to note that Yuta Okkotsu had been using reverse cursed energy to heal himself whenever he sustained significant damage from him and Uro, meaning that Okkotsu was likely expending a massive amount of energy and would soon run out. As he thought that, Okkotsu fully manifested a cursed spirit apparition called Rika, and his cursed energy was subsequently replenished. Okkotsu then used Cursed Speech (an innate technique that allowed it user to compel a target to follow their vocal commands) to stop Uro from moving and began pounding her with a barrage of punches alongside Rika.

Ishigori was ecstatic at the sight of his enemy's newly revealed power, and proceeded to fire a beam at the cursed spirit Rika. Rika easily withstood the blast with her hand and began attacking Ishigori in close quarters while Okkotsu battled Uro. The epic battle between the three sorcerers soon began to reach its climax with all three of them activated their Domain Expansions simultaneously. At that moment Kurourushi, who had actually survived his battle against Okkotsu, arrived on the scene. The complexity of three Domains overlapping at once caused them all to collapse at the same time without taking effect.

Okkotsu and Kurourushi began teaming up on Uro, leading to her arm being eaten by Rika and the rest of her body being damaged. Seeing his opportunity, Ishigori used his Granite Blast to defeat Uro and badly damage Kurourushi at the same time. Okkotsu then used reverse cursed energy to exorcize Kurourushi for good, leaving Ishigori and him as the last two standing. Ryu Ishigori began to reach a new height of exhilaration as he renewed his attack with a cursed energy beam that Okkotsu met with a shockwave of cursed energy of his own. He believed that Okkotsu was reaching his true limit, and as such he would be unable to heal himself any longer.

As Okkotsu closed in, Ishigori tried to finish the fight with a Granite Blast. Much to his surprise however, Okkotsu deflected the energy beam into the sky using Uro's cursed technique. Ishigori realized then that Okkotsu's innate cursed technique allowed him to copy cursed techniques from others and use them via his connection to Rika. Okkotsu and Rika then began to beat down on Ishigori, though Rika quickly reached her limit and dissipated. As Ishigori marvelled that he had finally found fulfilment, the cursed energy beam that Okkotsu had deflected earlier descended from the sky and struck Ishigori, knocking him out.

Having been defeated, Ryu Ishigori earnestly thanked Yuta Okkotsu for finally delivering the satisfaction he had been missing his entire life. As he laid on the ground, unable to move, he told Okkotsu that he was too soft for sparing his and Uro's lives. Okkotsu asked Ishigori to transfer his points to him, which confused him as such a request wasn't possible under the rules of the Culling Game. At that exact moment though, Kogane announced a rule had been added to the game elsewhere by Okkotsu's allies which allowed for the transferal of points. Ryu Ishigori accepted Okkotsu's request, and later parted ways with Yuta.

Facing the King of Curses[]

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. This is... way too sweet.
~ Ishigori upon learning of Sukuna's approach.

On November 16th, Ishigori sensed none other than Sukuna, the mightiest cursed spirit to have ever existed, enter the Sendai Colony. Though intimidated, Ishigori confronted the King of Curses in the middle of a street. Sukuna asked Ishigori to step aside, and when he didn't the King of Curses slashed him across the chest with "Cleave," an aspect of his cursed technique that allowed him to telekinetically cut his enemies. Though wounded, Ishigori survived the attack and prepared to launch a Granite Blast. Sukuna used Cleave once again, slicing Ishigori's head into three pieces with ease before he could even fire his first attack.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Energy Manipulation: Ryu Ishigori was a sorcerer, meaning he was capable of using jujutsu sorcery. Jujutsu sorcery was the practice of wielding cursed energy, a type of destructive internal energy source empowered by negative emotions, to create specific supernatural phenomena. All regular humans had their own supply of cursed energy, but only those with abundant amounts could become jujutsu sorcerers. Users of jujutsu sorcery could use advanced techniques, known as "cursed techniques," to grant themselves special abilities. Those with a larger amount of cursed energy in their body were typically more powerful sorcerers. Ishigori was a powerful sorcerer who was able to contend with special-grade cursed spirits and sorcerers, and was considered by some to have the highest cursed energy output (destructive level) to have ever been recorded in history.
    • Energy Projection: Some sorcerers were born with the inherent ability to use a specific cursed technique, known as an "innate technique," which could usually be used solely by them. Ryu Ishigori had an innate cursed technique called "Cursed Energy Discharge" that allowed him to project highly-destructive beams of cursed energy like a cannon out of the pompadour on the top of his head. Ishigori could charge his cursed energy up before firing, with his blasts being more powerful the longer they were charged. It was Ishigori's innate technique that earned him his reputation as a sorcerer with an exceptionally high cursed energy output. In addition to basic blasts, Ishigori could project a volley of rapid fire beams which were far more precise but less destructive. His signature attack, which he called "Granite Blast," was a simple long-ranged blast wave that could destroy a large area in a single discharge. Ishigori could finely control all of his blasts, allowing him to bend them in mid-air and use them like homing shots.
      • Personal Domain Creation: The most powerful technique available to wielders of jujutsu sorcerers was a "Domain Expansion." A Domain Expansion consisted of creating a barrier and filling it with one's own cursed energy. The cursed energy imbued into the barrier would instantly construct the user's innate domain (the visual manifestation of their mind) within the sectioned off space, and the innate technique of the user would also be imbued in the barrier. The effect of a Domain Expansion varied from user to user, though it almost always gave the user a big advantage in battle. The only way to avoid the effects of a Domain Expansion, regardless of what it did, was to deploy one's own Domain Expansion in the hopes that it would overpower the enemy's. Ryu Ishigori had a Domain Expansion with an unknown effect and name.
