For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again.
~ Ryuzu Myoujin

Ryuzu Myoujin is a major antagonist in the Cardfight!! Vanguard franchise and the main antagonist of the first three seasons of the Vanguard G series. He's also a minor antagonist in the 2018 reboot series during the Shinemon arc.

He's a scientist who discovered that the Planet Cray described in the lore of the card game Cardfight!! Vanguard truly exists and made it his goal to establish a connection between Earth and Cray. While his desire to reach planet Cray seemed belevolent at first, he plotted to harness the power of Gear Chronicle, one of Cray's clans which has the ability to control time, in order to recreate history.

He's also responsible for the disappearance of Chrono Shindou's father Rive.

Because of his actions creating the connection between Earth and Cray, Ryuzu can be consider the overarching Bigger Bad of the franchise, as all the conflicts throughout the series began due to him linking the two worlds together.

Background

Ever since childhood, Ryuzu always hated violence and wished to create a world without any conflicts. Ryuzu loved the game Cardfight!! Vanguard and was always fascinated by the lore of the game describing a mystical planet known as Cray where all the units in the game live in.

In his adulthood, Ryuzu worked as a scientist researching space-time distortions and traveling to distant worlds. During his research Ryuzu discovered that planet Cray truly does exist, however due to his theories were rejected by the entire scientific community because the idea of discovering a planet described in a simple card game seemed too outlandish and ridiculous. Nonetheless Ryuzu continued his research, with one of his assistants being his friend Rive Shindou, who was also fascinated in the idea of finding Planet Cray. Ryuzu also became a prominent figure in the international Vanguard asociation as the game became extremely popular worldwide.

During one of the experiments to establish a connection with Planet Cray Rive's 4 year old son Chrono was present in the experiment area and unintentionally communicated with a unit from Cray, a child dragon from Gear Chronicel named "Chrono Dran". Ryuzu's equipment detected the connection and convinced him that Chrono was the key to successfully find Planet Cray. Ryuzu's theory worked, however when the connection was created Rive realized that Ryuzu was intending to capture Units from Cray to abuse their powers. Rive sabotaged the experiment and fled with Chrono, Chrono Dran, and several blank "Depend Cards" that Ryuzu was planning to use to capture the Units.

After the incident Rive disappeared and was presumed dead while Chrono was left in an orphanage with no recollection of the incident or his meeting with Chrono Dran. Ryuzu continued his experiments summoning more Gear Chronicle Units to Earth, however each time he did so his own lifespan was shortened and caused his body to age rapidly.

Unknown to Ryuzu Rive was still alive and instructed Kouji Ibuki to begin making plans to stop Ryuzu's schemes when the right time comes. As Ryuzu continued his experiments for the next years, the incident had already created a permanent connection between Earth and Cray which manifests in the form of PSY-Qualia, a phenomenon which allows certain humans to manipulate what happens in Planet Cray when they play Vanguard matches. This connection indirectly allowed the Link Joker invasion to reach Planet Earth, but also allowed Cray's God to recruit human cardfighters to fight against Link Joker.

10 years later Chrono became intersted in Vanguard and somehow obtained a Gear Chronicle deck. Ibuki guided Chrono to became a powerful cardfighter and eventually had him join the plan to stop Ryuzu while also giving him one of the Depend Cards which materialized into a Chrono Dran's Vanguard card form. When Ibuki's plan went into action and several authorities stormed Ryuzu's lair to arrest him they found Ryuzu in a very old and weakened state who then died in front of Chrono and Ibuki.

Ryuzu had prepared a clone body for himself to "reincarnate" into after his initial organic body died out which was activated by his top henchmen "The Company". Ryuzu's new body however was that of a 10-year old. In his new form Ryuzu explained Chrono his desire to use Gear Chronicle's power to create a better world without wars and conflicts and tried to convince Chrono to join his cause, but after Chrono learned that Ryuzu was responsible for Rive's apparent death and realized that recreating Earth's timeline would doom Planet Cray as a side effect, he rejected Ryuzu's offer and vowed to stop him, however Ryuzu managed to steal all the Depend cards that Chrono had acquired from Ibuki before including Chrono Dran. With all the Depend Cards and the 12 Zodiac Time Beats summoned, Ryuzu began the preparations to create a "Stride Gate" which would set his plans in motion.

When the Stride Gate was activated most of the population of Earth except for Chrono and his allies fell unconcious. Ryuzu faced Ibuki in a Cardfight which he won through the use of his ultimate card "Deus Ex-Machina, Demiurge" which has the ability to stack the next 12 cards from his deck emulating how Ryuzu plans to recreate history by exploiting the power of Cray's Units. Though Ryuzu won the fight, Ibuki manged to free Chrono Dran from the Stride Gate and returned it to Chrono, temporarily stopping the Stride Gate from working.

Ryuzu challenged Chrono to a final Cardfight to attempt to recapture Chrono-Dran, but this time Chrono managed to counter Demuirge and defeat Ryuzu. Accepting defeat, Ryuzu allowed himself to face the consequences for summoning the Stride Gate, however instead of dying Ryuzu was reverted into a newborn. Ibuki speculated that this was Harmonics Messiah's way of giving Ryuzu a second chance to have a better life.

Legacy

Although Ryuzu was defeated, the Stride Gate Incident caused the connection between Earth and Cray to become closer, allowing Units from Planet Cray to posses humans who have a fond connection to their Vanguard cards. This new phenomenom was dubbed "Diffride" and was overseen by Harmonics Messiah to ensure its safety. While most Units who Diffride humans only do so for a form of "tourism", a group of Units known as the "Apostles" reached planet Earth without Messiah's authorization and began scheming to revive Messiah's archnemesis Gyze. This indirectly made Ryuzu responsible for starting yet another conflict that threatened to destroy Cray.

Reboot Series

Ryuzu once again appears in the 2018 reboot series during the "Shinemon" season. His role in the reboot is largely the same, being the one responsible for establishing the connection between Earth and Cray, however in the reboot Rive's Vanguard team mate Shinemon Nitta is more involved in the incident. Shinemon's mentor Esuka Hibino also became involved in the conflict as she was suspicious of Ryuzu's experiments, as not long ago a mysterious explosion happened in the town of Yumigatake where Ryuzu was previously established his laboratory.

One of Ryuzu's assistant Tatsuya Tachibana backstabbed Ryuzu and took over the experiment, as Tatsuya's parents were killed in the Yumigatake explosion. Tatsuya defeated Ryuzu and took control of his equipment to summon the unit "Arch-Raider, Malkuth Melekth" instead of Gear Chronicle as Ryuzu had planned. Tatsuya intended Malkuth Melekth to bring his parents back to life at the cost of his own, Tatsuya also was the one who discovered Chrono's connection with Chrono Dran and forcibly had Dran appear on Earth by threatening Chrono's life. Shinemon stopped Tatsuya's reckless plan by defeating him in a Cardfight forcing Malkuth Melekth to return to Cray, however when the fight ended Chrono was about to be taken into Cray alongside the units that had been summoned during the fight, but Rive jumped into the portal to save Chrono but Rive was then lost into the portal.

10 years later Ryuzu is seen among other prominent Cardfighters who were discussing establishing an international Vanguard association, however Ryuzu was now a broken man after the incident were Rive disappeared and gave up in his ambitions, making him no longer a threat to Earth or Cray.
