Sōsuke Aizen (藍染 惣右介 Aizen Sousuke) is the main antagonist of the Bleach franchise.
For over a century, he pretended to be a benevolent Shinigami captain while secretly conducting unethical Hollowfication experiments, one of which unintentionally led to the birth of Ichigo Kurosaki, until he finally revealed himself to be a traitor and escaped the Soul Society alongside his co-conspirators Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen.
Following his betrayal, Aizen managed to obtain the Hōgyoku, which he used to create an army of Arrancars to serve his cause, and attempted to sacrifice the human residents of Karakura Town so that he could create the Ōken, kill the Soul King, and recreate the world according to his vision. After he was defeated by Ichigo Kurosaki and sealed away by Kisuke Urahara, Aizen was sentenced to 20,000 years in Muken, the eighth and lowest level of the Soul Society's underground prison, as punishment for his crimes.
Two years later, during the Wandenreich's second invasion of the Soul Society, Aizen was temporarily paroled to help the Gotei 13 fight against the Quincy King Yhwach and his elite Sternritters. After Yhwach was ultimately killed by Ichigo, Aizen was sent back to Muken to complete his sentence.
He is voiced by Sho Hayami, who has also voiced Odin in Record of Ragnarok, in Japanese and Kyle Hebert in English who also voiced Nirgge Parduoc in the same series, Vac Attack and Overlord in The Grossery Gang, Berserker in Fate/Zero, General White and the Ox-King in Dragon Ball, Spec in Baki, Karasu in YuYu Hakusho, Bael and Dagon in Devil May Cry 4 and Kazuya Mishima in the English version of Tekken: Blood Vengeance.

Aizen is a tall man with brown hair and eyes. He wore glasses until he destroyed them when he doesn't need them to see. When he was a Shinigami, he wore a black Shinigami outfit with a white captain jacket symbol of Squad 5.
In the Arrancar arc, Aizen wore a white outfit.
After his defeat by Ichigo, Aizen wore a black prisoner outfit and an eyepatch covering his hollowfied eye.

Aizen is a completely calm and cold individual, having a very polite and knowledgeable manner about him and rarely showing any signs of alarm. He often tries to make small talk with his enemies and tends to show amusement when doing so infuriates them. Although he was initially believed to be an altruistic and kindhearted man by his colleagues in the Soul Society, in reality, Aizen is an extremely cruel, selfish, heartless, cunning, and dangerously manipulative individual who cares next to nothing about his minions, even if they show great loyalty towards him, and views everyone around him as pawns to use in order to achieve his nefarious goals. Befitting the personality of a classical mad scientist, Aizen also doesn't have a moral compass and sees having one as weakness.
Due to mostly lacking a moral code, Aizen is absolutely ruthless while pursuing his objectives and will stop at almost nothing to make sure that they succeed. With his minions, Aizen frequently toys with them for his own amusement and keeps them under control through acquired respect, intimidation, fear, or mind games. As a result, Aizen comes off as very mysterious to many of his underlings, with only Gin having some sense of his true emotions and feelings. His ultimate goal is to overthrow the Soul King and take his place as god, having stated to Ukitake that he seeks to "stand on top of the world and end the unbearable vacancy on the throne in the sky".
After mastering the Hogyoku, Aizen gradually becomes less cautious in battle and develops a god complex, believing that he has evolved into a being far beyond Shinigami and Hollows. His newfound powers cause him to become so arrogant and overconfident that he stops thinking through his moves like he used to and no longer takes the time to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents in combat. He also becomes easily enraged when he encounters situations that he can't understand, as shown by how he lost his temper after deducing that Ichigo somehow managed to surpass him in power.
By the time Aizen is released from Muken to defend the Soul Society from the Wandenreich, he has reverted back to his calm and casual personality, and even appears to have a change of heart upon learning about the enemy that they're up against. This is shown when he agrees to fight against Yhwach without even needing to be convinced by Shunsui and risks his own life to help Ichigo kill the Quincy King once and for all. He also shows disdain towards Yhwach's goal to fuse the three worlds into one due to his personal belief that doing so would only make the inhabitants of those worlds even weaker than they already are with the current status quo.

Aizen's Shikai Kyoka Suigetsu.
Genius Intellect: Arguably, the most fearsome trait of Aizen is his tremendous intellect. He is well-versed in the history, strategy, and tactics of Soul Society, and is privy to knowledge unknown to many, such as the existence of the Ōken and its method of creation. He has created several Hollows and Arrancar while avoiding any suspicion from the majority of Soul Society. For over one-hundred and ten years, he had been engaging in experiments involving unique and highly dangerous manipulations of Reiryoku and Reishi, including experiments involving the Hollowfication of Shinigami, something which had never been done before. He has an innate knowledge of the Hōgyoku, rivaling that of its creator, Kisuke Urahara, even knowing how to destroy it. He figured out the true nature of Shinji Hirako's Shikai, allowing him to counter its effect. He effectively deduces the true nature of the Hōgyoku via trial and error of the situations which revolve around it. He knows of the Hado #96 Itto Kaso which is the forbidden Kido that only activate when the user sustained burnt body.
- Master Manipulator: Aizen has proven himself to be a very crafty and cunning man since his public betrayal of Soul Society. He can deceive and manipulate others around him in different ways for a variety of purposes. For years, he convinced everyone around him he was a kind-hearted man with the best intentions for Soul Society while performing horrific actions. He has a great talent for analyzing and observing everything in his presence, allowing him to understand a person's pattern of thinking and better manipulate them. He can formulate well thought out plans several steps ahead of others, some of which have a long term in mind. His most well-known plan spans over 110 years, a great accomplishment which involved moving people around like pieces on a chessboard and making sure they played the role he had planned out for them. He is masterful at plans within plans, such as kidnapping Orihime, allowing him to use her abilities to extend the shelf life of the Hōgyoku and lure many of his enemies into Hueco Mundo to trap them, making it easier for him to accomplish the goal invading the Royal Palace. He can shatter the will of others. He has unnaturally high charisma, enabling him to gain the trust and loyalty of others and gaining significant influence over others.
- Master Strategist & Tactician: Aizen has proven himself to be a flawless and flexible tactician, adjusting seamlessly to any given situation, if not planning out events well in advance. He understands the strengths, weaknesses and mannerisms of his enemies, and creates strategies to achieve victory; this includes modifying an Arrancar for the sole purpose of defeating Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, a Shinigami whose abilities surpass his own. Aizen is highly cautious and leaves no blind spots. He is capable of consciously focusing, and being fully aware of multiple people, dangers, locations, tasks, etc., and processing all of it at once without any trouble or confusion. He can notice, process and understand any/all details of any situation or environment no matter how small, allowing him to intuitively understand and solve any problem or situation no matter how difficult or impossible it may be.
- Shunpo Master: Aizen is so fast, opponents commonly cannot discern even being attacked by him until after it has taken place. Aizen can dodge simultaneous attacks at close-range and even when being attacked from behind.
- Immense Strength: Aizen is strong enough to stop the blade of Ichigo's Bankai with just one index finger and almost cut him in half with a single sword strike. He stopped Renji Abarai's Shikai with his bare hand and broke it with one swing, injuring Renji in the process. He stopped Komamura's Shikai with his bare hand, proving his strength is more than enough to combat someone of the same level.
- Immortality: Aizen attained immortality and nigh-indestructibility, he kept regenerating himself no matter the damage, resulting in the necessity to seal him away deep in the underground prison. After being hit by Ichigo's Mugetsu, Aizen restores from the damage. He is later confirmed by Central 46 to having been left immortal by his interaction with the Hōgyoku. Even after Ichigo killed Yhwach while absorbing Aizen, Aizen somehow survived.
- Kido Master: Aizen is the master of Kido. He used Bakudo #81 Danku to summon a barrier to block his enemies attacks. He used Hado #90 Kurohitsugi to trap his enemies into a dark box and pierce with spear-like protrusions when he used it on Sajin Komamura although it was a failure as Aizen doesn't have a complete control over it.
Aizen possesses immense spiritual power, even for a captain-level Soul Reapers. He possesses incredible intellect, having knowledge on many things and high craftiness and cunning. Aizen is extremely skilled at manipulating others and always thinks a few steps ahead of his opponent and thinking out incredibly detailed plans with many steps. Aizen is able to adjust to any kind of situation in battle and has a great understanding of his foes, thus he can prepare to deal with them. Like all Soul Reapers, his primary weapon is his Zanpakutō, Kyōka Suigetsu, and he can activate and deactivate its Shikai ability with the release command "Shatter". Its primary technique, Kanzen Saimin, is the power to completely and perfectly hypnotize the opponent, controlling all five senses so that Aizen can create a variety of illusions to trick them.
To hypnotize the person, they have to see the release of Kyōka Suigetsu and from then on, the person will be completely under the hypnosis' power. The influence of Kyōka Suigetsu can last for years as seen with the Visoreds, who were first hypnotized 110 years ago. The hypnosis can even affect the person if they are aware that they are being manipulated by it. However, those with great power and ability can notice slight differences in the illusions, even if they can't determine what they are. The only way to avoid being controlled by Kyōka Suigetsu is to touch the blade before its hypnosis power is activated. It is presumed that since Aizen is a captain, he can release the Bankai form of Kyōka Suigetsu, but he has never been seen using it. However, after his evolution prior to his capture, Kyōka Suigetsu corrodes away as his Zanpakuto power has become a part of him. With the Hogyoku planted in his chest, it regenerates all of Aizen's wounds and increases his strength and durability.
After his first transformation by the Hōgyoku, Aizen is in his "chrysalis" stage, possessing higher spiritual power, and increased strength, durability, and speed. After finishing his "chrysalis" stage, Aizen was even harder to harm, destroying the Kōtotsu by just having it collide with him, and even higher spiritual power, able to destroy souls just by being around them. In his third form, Aizen had greater strength and could teleport by breaking into shards, then reforming elsewhere. After transforming for the last time, he has a much more Hollow-like appearance and can fire powerful energy spheres from the skulls on his wings, as well as surround his opponent with an energy ring to destroy them.

Trivia[]
- The details of Aizen's Bankai are unknown, as he has never used it.
- He is also the only captain out of the 13 captains originally introduced in the story to have never used his Bankai in the entire series.
- According to the novel The Spirits Are Forever With You, Aizen's Bankai can only work on those who witness and are under the influence of his Shikai.
- By the time of the Quincy Blood War, it is revealed that Aizen has only grown more powerful during his imprisonment in Muken and is actually stronger than he was than when he was fused with the Hōgyoku. This caused the Quincies to percieve him as a threat to their goals even though there was initially little chance that they would ever face him in battle.
- Ichigo suspected that Aizen only ever wished to have an equal in power, suggesting he became a megalomaniac from being unable to form a connection with others due to his strength.
- Aizen can be compared to Christianity's Lucifer in various decrees: The first is that both originally served a greater power before acting on their own whims to take control of reality. The second connection is that they manipulate others, gathering armies to aid in their endeavors and, being sealed away after the coup failed. Lastly, Aizen's final form resembles the humanoid version of Lucifer's Red Dragon form from the Book of Revelation as painted by William Blake.
