SA-55 is the secondary antagonist of the 2008 platform game Sonic Unleashed. He is a robot built by Dr. Eggman, serving as his right-hand assistant and advisor during the Dark Gaia incident. However, despite his loyalty to Dr. Eggman, SA-55 frequently talks back to his master and mocks him for his failures. He is also heavily implied to be the prototype and predecessor to Orbot.
He is voiced by Christopher Collet in English and by Mitsuo Iwata in Japanese, with the latter also voicing his successor Orbot.
Biography[]
Sonic Unleashed[]
In Sonic Unleashed, SA-55 assisted Dr. Eggman in his plan to use the power of Dark Gaia, which had scattered around the world when Dr. Eggman awoke it, to construct Eggmanland. He oversaw this process, doing the mechanical processes involved and relaying information of the plan's progress. When Dr. Eggman deployed his Egg Cauldron to take of Sonic in the Tornado-1, SA-55 warned Dr. Eggman that it was incomplete and to handle it gently, but was ignored.
SA-55 later accompanied Dr. Eggman on his trip to Mazuri to secure a Gaia Temple. There, he laughed at Dr. Eggman when he was pegged in the face by a rock thrown by Kwod before he was shut up by the doctor. When Sonic then came to the villagers' rescue, SA-55 came with Dr. Eggman as he escaped.
Back at Dr. Eggman's base, SA-55 presented Dr. Eggman with his dinner and reported that his plans were behind schedule, which SA-55 constantly noted was the doctor's own fault while pointing out the undesired results of his hasty actions. As Dr. Eggman contemplated on how to gather Dark Gaia's pieces, SA-55 gave his suggestions, but was brushed aside when Dr. Eggman had the idea of attracting them with an energy pulse. As Dr. Eggman's plan proved to be successful, SA-55 commenced Project Dark Gaia upon Dr. Eggman's clearance.
Later on, SA-55 was in Dr. Eggman's Egg Mobile with Dr. Eggman as the doctor was defeated by Sonic in the Egg Dragoon and then knocked into the horizon by Dark Gaia appeared. Landing in a rocky region as Sonic and Chip defeated Dark Gaia and thwarted Dr. Eggman's plans, SA-55 suggested to Dr. Eggman that he could begin anew as he listed all the ways the doctor's plans had failed, making Dr. Eggman snap and try to kick him. SA-55, however, dodged the kick and ran off with the doctor chasing after him.
Off-screen, it is implied he is caught and reprogrammed against his will into the more loyal robot Orbot, who first appears in Sonic Colors.
Personality[]
SA-55 is often sassy and tactless, especially towards his own creator. Whenever Dr. Eggman gets into any sort of misfortune or messes up on one of his plans, he shows little to no respect for him, and instead mocks him for the failure. He can also be quite cheeky, as when Eggman attempts to kick him in the ending out of annoyance, and Eggman slips and falls, SA-55 proceeds to giggle at this and runs off as Eggman chases after him.

Trivia[]
- He was nicknamed "Ergo" by fans due to his frequent use of the word while dissecting Dr. Eggman's plans.
- His name, SA-55 is leetspeak for Sass.
- The Archie Sonic continuity seems to treat SA-55 and Orbot as a single character, SA-55 being Archie Orbot's production number.
- In the HD version of Sonic Unleashed, SA-55 seems to be piloting some of Dr. Eggman's mechs such as the Egg Devil Ray and the Egg Lancer.
- SA-55 appears to have some level of command in the Eggman Empire, as he can be heard giving orders to the robots that pilot some of Dr. Eggman's machines during boss fights.
