I cannot stress this enough. The damn thing jumped right through those poor people.
~ Dr. Carver
This is not a joke. We have no idea what SCP-1048's full capabilities are. Who knows how many of the damn things are out there by now?
~ Dr. Carver

SCP-1048, also referred to as the Builder Bear, is an antagonist in the SCP Foundation series. It is a Keter class, living, sentient teddy bear that tricks humans and uses them for materials in its builds.

It appears as a supporting antagonist in the video game SCP: Containment Breach.

Appearance[]

SCP-1048 is a brown and white teddy bear, approximately 33 centimeters in height. It has a long brown snout, a black nose, and two brown eyes attached to its face. It has pointed ears and wears a black bow tie.

Behavior and Procedure[]

SCP-1048 is a sentient teddy bear. It can move and walk on its own, though no explanation has been found to why this is. Its composition is the same material as a standard teddy bear. SCP-1048 is mute, but expressive through a range of gestures. These gestures are normally affectionate and endearing, such as hugs, dances, jumping, and drawing. All personnel that has come into contact with SCP-1048 while performing these gestures finds them charming and cute, even personnel with normally serious and even violent tendencies. Dr. Carver suggested that SCP-1048 used its charming and enduring qualities to fool and lure human victims into a false sense of security, and then attacked and harvested materials from them. However, neither the harvesting nor the creation processes have ever been witnessed by the Foundation.

Biography[]

Possible Origins[]

Diary of a Young Girl[]

SCP-1048 was first discovered by a young girl named Lizzy Byrn who found it in the top room of her new home, and she affectionately named it Benny. When SCP-1048's anomalous properties were discovered, it was taken away by the girl's mother, then heavily implied that she was killed by SCP-1048. SCP-1048 later built a living duplicate out of the girl's baby brother Tommy, and another one made by her father, the latter she named Davey. The fate of the girl and how SCP-1048 was discovered by the Foundation remains unknown.

Reap What You Sew[]

SCP-1048 was originally a normal human child named Michael Ferris born prematurely around July 19th of 1937, and because of this he was expected to make it. Fortunately for him, one of Michael's toys, a teddy bear, had inexplicably come to life and feeling bad for him and his parents went to his incubator and created replica organs out of its fellow stuffed animals in order to replace Michael's failing ones. This worked as Michael was out danger and became a healthy child. Over the course of two years, Michael and his teddy bear became friends and always played together outside of their home, but when his parents looked over to them Mr. Teddy would pretend to not be alive.

Saddly, one fateful day, their house caught on fire, with Michael remaining inside while Mr. Teddy had been left outside. The toy quickly came to Michael's rescue, finding him badly burned. He attempted to get Michael out of the burning house, but was unable to do so as he had fainted. In their last moments together, Mr. Teddy removed his own skin to replace Michael's to save his life, making the boy a teddy bear. Michael was saved and was shortly contained by the Foundation. Once under containment, Michael, now designated SCP-1048, longed for his best friend Mr. Teddy and decided to use his power inherited from him to create a new Mr. Teddy.

Peace is Said, and Bears Start Calling[]

SCP-1048 was at first a normal teddy bear gifted to SCP-239 by her caretaker Dr. Lana Trondeheim. She would keep the teddy bear with her for most of the time and because of her reality bending powers, 1048 came to life. However, after being separated 1048 became a cruel and manipulative individual, seeking to create copies of itself to harm people.

Foundation Custody[]

For the first 7 months of containment, SCP-1048 was classified as Safe and allowed to wander the site. However, the Foundation soon discovered that SCP-1048 was collecting materials off of human subjects, and building living duplicates of itself with these materials.

The first creation, SCP-1048-A, was composed entirely of human ears. It was first seen being given a tour by SCP-1048. When security arrived to detain the two, SCP-1048-A let out an ear-splitting shriek that caused immense pain and the growth of ear-like appendages all over the bodies of victims within a 10-meter range. Many died due to asphyxiation from the ear-like growths in their mouths and throats. Both subjects escaped. It was later found that one of the doctors had mysteriously lost an ear while he was sleeping.

SCP-1048-B was found later, moving in jerky, unnatural ways. An opening in the subject's seams revealed the hand and forearm of a human infant. A female personnel member became horrified by this and screamed, causing SCP-1048-B to scream similarly to a human infant, then attack her. Security was forced to destroy both SCP-1048-B and the personnel member. Hours later, a female doctor was found unconscious and bleeding. Evidence showed that the 8-month-old fetus she was carrying had been aborted in her sleep.

SCP-1048-C, the final known creation, was first seen not long after the SCP-1048-B incident, made completely of metal scraps. It was found and pursued by Dr. Carver. During its escape, it exhibited extremely violent behavior and killed several of the personnel before escaping.

None of the subjects, including SCP-1048, have been recovered, though some sightings are reported from time to time in the site.

Possible Endings[]

Old Kansas Sector ~ 8: Gersha[]

As the entire world was slowly being destroyed, SCP-1048 and its copies took over the town of Wichitaw, becoming its mayor. As they were the sole residents of the town, the duplicates endlessly killed each other in order to form new copies, while 1048 stood aside. On August 13 of 2119, Dr. Kondraki met with 1048 to establish public relations, but appeared to not have worked out.

The Attack Begins, and I Ascend[]

Following a unknown K-Class Scenario in the outside world, SCP-1048 was left inside the massive underground Site-118. There it waited near Greattown, a stronghold formed of surviving Foundation personnel, for SCP-239 to return to it and use her powers for its own goals. When 239 finally arrived to Greattown so she could be reunited with Lana, the latter outright rejected and insulted her, not wanting her and her people to have anything to do with the anomalous girl, filling her with despair and anger. 1048 took the opportunity to reach into her mind and convince her exact revenge for her treatment, causing 239 to ascend near the ceiling of the floor they were in and helping 1048 build a massive army of its duplicates riding instances of SCP-3199. Soon this army ambushed Greattown slaughtering almost everyone present. Lana climbed the tallest tower there was to apologize to 239 but 1048 convinced her that the apology wasn't genuine and she should torture her for hurting her. Luckily, SCP-2006, 239 newfound companion and best friend, soon climbed the tower as well and attempted to talk to her, telling her that 1048 was just manipulating her and didn't love her that way he did. 1048 sought to persuade 239 to ignore him and continue with the massacre, but 2006's words got through to her and she realized that her former teddy bear was evil. She proceeded to destroy all of the monstrous army she helped to build before taking 1048's life away, rendering it a normal teddy bear once again.

Personality[]

SCP-1048 first appeared to be kind, friendly, enthusiastic, and charming, but this was a façade. It most likely used its charming appearance to make victims lower their guards, allowing it to collect materials used in the creation of its clones. As such, it can be assumed that it is really cold, violent, aggressive, and dangerous, though its mute nature restricts information on its intentions or motives.

In Other Media[]

SCP - Containment Breach[]

SCP-1048 and SCP-1048-A appear in SCP - Containment Breach. SCP-1048 appears mainly as an easter egg, acting harmless and sometimes drawing. If approached by the player, it will disappear.

SCP-1048-A is sometimes encountered. If approached, it will screech and cause damage and ear-like growths to sprout. Remaining in the area for too long will cause death to the player.
