1. Do not attempt to run. Fleeing may provoke SCP-2901 to give chase. 2. Hold your ground. Be sure to make eye contact. 3. Make a threat display. Use clothing to imitate an increase in body mass. 4. Continue Step 3 until SCP-2901 becomes disinterested and submits. 5. Avoid physical contact if at all possible. Wield or throw objects to maintain distance.

~ Steps provided by the SCP Foundation if one were to encounter an SCP-2901 instance.
SCP-2901, more commonly known as the Mothmen, are collectively a Euclid-class SCP and potential antagonists in the SCP Foundation. They are a collection of reality-warping creatures that usually appear in a specific area before a disasters strike there. Though they are not openly hostile by nature, humans unlucky enough to encounter the creatures can still be viciously attacked by them.
The SCP is based off of the real-life myth of the Mothman, a creature that appears in certain areas before a horrific disaster takes the same location. Since the SCP instances can move freely through space-time with no restrictions, containing them is impossible.
The origins of the SCP are the same as the actual mythology surrounding the Mothman. An instance was seen in West Virginia, USA before the Silver Bridge collapsed in 1967. This information, however, is obscured by the SCP Foundation in the actual article. From this point onward, many SCP-2901 instances are seen roughly a month or week before a disaster occurs - disasters that usually result in many fatalities.
Throughout history, the SCPs have been able to detect when a disastrous event will occur, as well as the amount of fatalities it will bring. When multiple instances of the SCP appears in one area, they've been reported to fight each other with territorial aggression. The SCP Foundation has discovered that simply knowing about the SCP can help bring it into existence.
Because of this, the SCP have begun efforts to control or manipulate any information regarding the SCP's existence. This includes any mention of the SCP through various forms of media. When the SCP was first discovered by the Foundation, it was classified as "Keter", as this was before the Foundation knew that controlling information about the SCP could lessen its presence.
The Foundation is also attempting to turn the public's opinion on the SCP into a more docile and manageable concept, rather than the more malevolent view the public has on the creatures. Any civilians that know of the creature are given amnestics, and any media reporting of the creatures are also hastily deleted.
Biography[]
SCP-2901 are a collection of an enigmatic, nocturnal scavengers. They have a humanoid shape albeit with some insect properties, with skin similar to the material of skin that butterflies and moths have. They possess two large eyes layered with photophoric tissue. They are able to move freely through space and time with no impedance whatsoever, which also give them the ability of levitation, flight and teleportation. It is because of this, that the SCP Foundation cannot contain any of the SCP instances.
They can emit an acoustic cancellation effect within a radius of about 25 meters, which is likely to aid themselves in stealth, but the true purpose for this ability is unknown. The public has explained the instances were dark humanoids with large red eyes and wings (a description matching the creature's appearance in the mythology). There seems to be a connection of the SCP's existence and humans simply knowing about them, as knowing about the SCP, or simply conceptualizing it some way, brings strength to the SCP's physical form.
Because of this, the SCP created "Operation: Surgeon's Photograph", which is a constantly-ongoing effort to spread misinformation about the SCP, or sometimes outright block any mention of it all on any form of media. The operation is meant to control information, rather than hide or protect it. The SCPs - despite their paranormal levels of solidity - can still be harmed by standard firearms.
Touching an SCP instance will cause a body part to fuse together with that of the SCP instance's. This means that once the instance moves in any way or teleports away, the connected flesh can be mutilated and torn off.
Behavior[]
The intelligence of the creatures appears to be limited, and though they are not openly hostile to humans, they can still be provoked. Something simply being near the creatures is still enough to provoke them. They do not speak or seem to communicate in any way. Interactions between the SCP instances and humans have ranged from oddly unexplainable to extremely horrific. Any humans near an SCP-2901 instance can bring the instance to perceive the human as a threat, regardless of what the human was doing beforehand.
When in an aggressive state, SCP-2901 instances can turn into a large nebulous-like body to ward off potential threats. SCP instances near each other will fight each other, as they can be heavily territorial. The instances will also feed off deceased human remains after a disaster has occurred. Exactly why these instances behave the way they do is unknown, but it can be speculated that they simply want to feed off of disaster victims.
It is possible for an SCP-2901 to be scared off by a human acting as threatening as possible, but still not making physical contact with it.
