The Child rose its ten mouths to the heavens, stretched wide twenty arms, and ripped the umbilical cord from the sack on its head. The warriors surged to its legs, hoping to tear those newly born limbs before they could move, but from the mouths spilled torrents of darkness and dead geometries. None could flee. Reality rippled with the warriors stretching along its folds and the darkness crunched into their skulls with flares of scarlet. The Child wheezed, dragging skeletal fingers through the dead and the land around.

SCP-4290, better known as The Child, is an immensely powerful monster existing in the SCP Foundation series. It is an ancient eldritch horror sealed beneath Qinghai Lake in China that has the power to potentially wipe out entire planets and consume the souls of the dead.
Centuries ago, SCP-4290 was born on an unknown island. An army of warriors attempted to kill it as it tore away its umbilical cord, but the Child spewed dark magic from its ten mouths and wiped them out, apparently causing reality itself to be affected. The entire island then dissolved into the darkness, alongside the surviving warriors and the souls of the dead. The Child then spent 10 days consuming the darkness, leaving the entire world trembling.
Eventually, Humanity managed to seal the Child beneath the Qinghai Lake in China. To prevent it from escaping, a ritual involving a sacrifice of three human corpses and the heart of an angel had to be performed to prevent the seal trapping it from breaking. Many civilisations performed the ritual, including the Erikeshans, the Xia Dynasty, the Ortothans and the Daevites, until eventually the Child was forgotten. The last ritual was performed around 10,000 years before the Child's rediscovery.
The SCP Foundation became aware of the Child's existence in 2022, dubbing it SCP-4290. As it came closer to escaping, a series of broadcasts began playing around the lake instructing people to repair the seal. This led the Foundation to discover the seal (SCP-4290-LOCK) and begin searching for methods of repairing it. This resulted in the Foundation attempting to perform the ritual, but accidentally damaging the seal in the process and failing to complete the sacrifice. All subsequent attempts to make the offering were rejected by SCP-4290.
The Foundation eventually concluded that SCP-4290 would breach containment some time in the following week. This resulted in several agents deserting their posts out of fear. The Foundation gathered the Mobile Task Forces Alpha-1 ("Red Right Hand") , Tau-5 ("Samsara"), and Nu-7 ("Hammer Down") and equipped them with experimental paratechnology to prepare for the inevitable fight.
On the 17th of August, the seal finally broke, releasing SCP-4290. However, the monster was found lying motionless at the bottom of the lake, with all the offerings made to it in the past few centuries found resting on its mouth. Inspection showed that SCP-4290 had starved to death 9,000 years previously. The Foundation thus considered it neutralised.
Powers and Abilities[]
The true power of SCP-4290 is not exactly known as there are only legends about it while its actual power hasn't been observed due to having been mostly imprisoned and dead from malnourishment. It is said that SCP-4290 was a powerful god-like monstrosity, scientifically a Class-I Eschatological Entity, which was probably immortal as it was able to live for countless years and only died as a result of malnutrition. It appeared to have possessed shapeshifting abilities as it could form new limbs which it could use alongside its ten mouths to cause destruction. According to the legends, 4290 could form torrents of darkness, spew fire from its fingertips, ripple reality, create dead geometries, rain corrosive wax, melt an entire island, and also melt souls into darkness. While imprisoned and dead, the Child presumably emitted thaumic radiation in form of red light that engulfed the entire lake and cause severe seismic pulses that fractured the totems concealing it.

SCP-4290 is a subversion of god-like monsters being unleashed from their imprisonment to destroy the world, like SCP-2317-K.
In the reality of SCP-5000 in which the SCP Foundation decided to exterminate the entire human race, they revived SCP-4290 by infecting it with SCP-008 that was enhanced through SCP-914. As it was let loose and destroyed everything in its path, the Serpent's Hand attempted to fight it.
