SCP-6097, AKA Granny Rat Tail, is an antagonist in the SCP Foundation series. She is a rat-tailed witch who terrorized the people of New England during the early eighteenth century, although she is considered neutralized following her capture in the "Brownsborough Incident" of 1730.
SCP-6097, colloquially known as "Granny Rat Tail", was an anomalous entity first sighted in 1724. She was described as physically resembling a cross between an elderly human woman and a large rat, with silver hair covering most of her face and torso. Her most recognisable feature was a long, rat-like tail protruding from the base of her spine, at the tip of which was a third eye. She possessed a giant metal spoon (SCP-6097-1) which she used to fly around at speeds of over 50 km an hour, in the same way a stereotypical witch would use a broomstick.
In the early hours of the morning, SCP-6097 would fly into a random New England village on SCP-6097-1 and land on the rooftops of each civilian home and poorhouse in turn. Upon landing, she would extend her tail down the chimney (after first extinguishing the fire using sand) and use her third eye to look around. If she found a human child under 18 months old, SCP-6097 would strangle it to death with her tail and drag it back up the chimney before moving on to the next house. Once she had done this to every house she would fly away. Evidence suggests that she retreated to a wooden cottage somewhere in Maryland, where the partially-eaten remains of a number of infants dating from 1724 - 1729 were excavated.
The Brownsborough Incident[]
SCP-6097's activities came to an end on September 4, 1730, when she visited the fictional town of Brownsborough, Massachusetts. At 0300 hours, carpenter James Walker awoke and saw SCP-6097's tail emerging from his fireplace and observing his infant daughter. Immediately realizing that Granny Rat Tail was on his roof, he leapt up and after a brief struggle succeeded in nailing SCP-6097's tail to the floor. Local law enforcement were contacted and managed to retrieve SCP-6097 from the roof. SCP-6097-1 was confiscated and found to already be carrying the dead body of one unidentified male infant, who was given a Christian burial.
SCP-6097 was imprisoned at the local jail and tortured by witch-finders for eight to ten hours, but proved impossible to interrogate because she did not speak English. The following day she was convicted of witchcraft and infanticide and sentenced to death. However, authorities then encountered a problem; SCP-6097 was impossible to kill. The initial execution attempt took the form of binding SCP-6097 with rope and throwing her in a pond near the Walker residence to drown. The water immediately began increasing in temperature and after ten minutes had reached boiling point, and SCP-6097 was assumed dead and retrieved with a fishing net. But remarkably, despite having been submerged in boiling water for ten minutes she was still conscious and had only experienced moderate scalding.
The executioners then decided to burn SCP-6097 at the stake. She was tied to a wooden stake in the town square and set alight, whereupon the flames began to glow a variety of unusual colours and induced migraines and nausea in onlookers. When after 20 minutes SCP-6097 had only experienced third-degree burns the flames were extinguished. Now increasingly desperate, the executioners attempted a final time to kill her by decapitating her with an iron axe. The moment her head was cut off, SCP-6097's body began decaying at a rapid rate until all that was left were her bones, which were sealed in a well 12 km outside the town.
While her body decayed, SCP-6097's head remained intact and continued to blink and move its eyes for several minutes after being cut off. Not believing they would be able to destroy it, the townsfolk instead sealed the head inside a wooden crate and buried it in an unknown location.
Aftermath[]
Between 1731 and 1734, an unusually high number of stillbirths and miscarriages occurred in Brownsborough, with over thirty residents dying in childbirth. In many cases the stillborn infants suffered anomalous birth defects, the most common being born without a head or with a long, rat-like tail. Throughout this period the brown rat population of Brownsborough increased exponentially, with existing instances producing litters of up to thirty offspring. New specimens grew to three times the usual size and were unusually aggressive towards humans, resulting in the spread of virulent diseases such as listeria and salmonella. These factors combined led to Brownsborough being abandoned by 1735, and are though to have been caused by SCP-6097.
Over the following decades, the American Secure Containment Initiative worked to suppress knowledge of SCP-6097, confiscating all newspapers mentioning her and all court documents relating to the Brownsborough Incident. Her bones and SCP-6097-1, which had been thrown down Blair's Gorge, were both recovered and transported to the future Site-44. Her head was never found, and the ASCI's successor the SCP Foundation is currently looking for it.
