The Saan Family are minor characters in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation, Game of Thrones.
They are a family of Lysene pirates who are of Valyrian descent. Over the centuries, they have been known for producing pirates. In addition, the Saans are also famous for being pirate lords for at least 300 years, dating back to the time of Aegon I Targaryen.
As of the main A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, the only member of the Saan family to appear is Salladhor Saan, who formerly supported House Baratheon of Dragonstone and its ruling monarch, Stannis Baratheon, during the latter's campaign to seize the Iron Throne from House Baratheon of King's Landing and House Lannister. He abandons Stannis's cause during the sea voyage from Eastwatch-by-the-Sea to White Harbor, after losing multiple ships to late autumn storms, leaving Davos Seaworth at the Three Sisters in the Vale and sailing back to the south.
Historical Members[]
- Sargoso Saan: A Lysene pirate-king in the Stepstones during the reign of Aegon the Conqueror. In 29 and 30 AC, Sargoso was driven out of the Stepstones by Prince Maegor Targaryen, Lord Aethar Velaryon, and Ser Osmund Strong.
- Saathos Saan: Originally a Lysene captain who was sent to clear out pirates from the Basilisk Isles, he instead became a pirate himself and turned to piracy. He would rise to become a great pirate lord and unite all pirates, ruling over them as the King of the Basilisk Isles. Though the exact time he lived is unclear, he apparently lived between the time of Old King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and the War of the Five Kings.
- Samarro Saan: Known as The Last Valyrian. During the reign of King Jaehaerys II Targaryen, Samarro became a member of the Band of Nine, the infamous instigators of the War of the Ninepenny Kings.
Members as of the end of the Third Century[]
- Salladhor Saan: Known as Salla by his friends. A Lysene pirate captain and the self-styled Prince of the Narrow Sea. He is also a sellsail, trader, banker, and smuggler. Declared Lord of Blackwater Bay by Lord Alester Florent, a title which he used to extort sailors by "taxing" them or else seize all their belongings. Originally supporting Stannis Baratheon, Salladhor abandons his contract with him after losing most of his fleet as well as Stannis' failure to pay for his service. Salladhor is currently in the Stepstones, engaging in piracy.
Trivia[]
- In the novels, the Saans are Valyrians from Lys, and the descendant Salladhor Saan was born fair-haired, although now his hair has gone white with old age. While a Lyseni, Salladhor has olive skin, in contrast to the majority of the Lysene population, both nobles and smallfolk having the pale skin, silver or silver-gold hair, and purple, lilac, or pale blue eyes of the dragonlords of Old Valyria. In the TV series, Salladhor is a Lyseni as well, but of Summer Islander descent, and he is black.
