Sabaku, also known as Professor Sabaku, is the main antagonist of the anime series Heartcatch Pretty Cure!. He is the leader of the Desert Apostles, who wish to kill the Tree of Hearts. It is ultimately revealed that his true identity is Professor Tsukikage, Yuri Tsukikage's long-lost father. He is also the archenemy of Pretty Cure, particularly Yuri, as well as the partner of Dune.
He was voiced by Taiten Kusunoki in the Japanese version and Alberto Angrisano in the English dubbed version.
Appearance[]
Sabaku is a tall man with long grey hair, cladded in a long black coat and boots. He covers his face with a dark teal and grey mask, which is later revealed to be the device that keeps him under Dune's control. Once unmasked, he is revealed to have brown eyes and be somewhat wrinkled.
Personality[]
Initially, Sabaku is depicted as a tyrant who wishes to kill the Tree of Hearts. As the Pretty Cure is standing on his way, he also seeks to destroy them. Normally quiet, Sabaku is rather ruthless to his subordinates, and like many villains before and after him, not hesitating to use them to achieve his goals.
However, after he is revealed to be Yuri's father, it shows that Sabaku is much deeper than he initially appears. He is, in truth, brainwashed by the mask he wears into serving Dune. Once freed from his control, he turns against Dune and sacrifices himself protecting his daughter.
History[]
Fight Before the Tree of Hearts[]
Sabaku was originally Yuri's father, Professor Tsukikage. When he was doing research about the Tree of Hearts, he met two of Dune's followers who gave him a mask, which brainwashed him and put him under Dune's control. Now the leader of the Desert Apostles, Tsukikage renamed himself Sabaku and led them to kill the Tree of Hearts on Dune's behalf. He also created Dark Cure using part of Yuri to fight the Pretty Cure.
Sabaku witnessed the fight between Dark Cure and Cure Moonlight before the tree, and was surprised when it didn't die upon Cure Moonlight's defeat despite its flowers having all fallen off. Cure Moonlight then tells him that the tree would be alive as long as Pretty Cure existed, so he ordered Dark Cure to finish her off. However, just then he noticed Chypre and Coffret escaping with two new Heart Perfumes. Seeing Cure Moonlight losing her Pretty Cure seed, Sabaku ordered Sasorina to take the Heart Perfumes to him instead.
New Pretty Cure[]
Later, Sasorina tells Sabaku that a new Cure has appeared, named Cure Blossom, who she says to be the weakest Cure in history, so Sabaku sends Sasorina to eliminate her. However Cure Marine soon joins the band, and Sasorina claims that she is somewhat stronger than Cure Blossom, although since Kumojaki claims that not even a hundred Cures can win against him, Sabaku sends him to fight the Cures in Sasorina's place. After Kumojaki failed, Sabaku replaces him with Cobraja.
With multiple defeats from the Desert Messengers at the hand of the Pretty Cure, Sabaku grows weary of their underperformances and tells a Snackey to tell Cobraja to defeat a Cure as soon as possible. With Cobraja failing again, Sabaku finally loses his patience altogether and decides to send Dark Cure instead.
True Identity Revealed[]
Sabaku later kidnaps Kaoruko to lure the Cures into rescuing her. During the battle, Chypre attacks Sabaku and he tries to pull her away, just when he sees Cure Moonlight about to finish off Dark Cure. Wanting to rescue his daughter, he takes the hit and causes the mask to fall off, revealing his true identity as Yuri's father. He then reveals how he created Dark Cure, and later after Cure Moonlight defeated her, that she is Cure Moonlight's younger sister as she was created with Yuri's bone. Dark Cure then dies in his arms as Dune arrives unimpressed.
Dune battles Sabaku, Moonlight and Blossom and effortlessly defeats them, but Sabaku uses himself to protect Yuri and Tsubomi from the explosion. He bids farewell to Yuri and tells her to look after her mother, before being destroyed by the exploding energy, leaving only pieces of his clothes behind.

Trivia[]
- Sabaku is the first parent to be a villain, the second being Mephisto. Coincidentally, both were brainwashed into doing so.
