Ishmael Gregor, later known as Sabbac, is the main antagonist of the 2022 DC Extended Universe superhero film Black Adam.
He was a member of the Intergang who sought to obtain the Crown of Sabbac in order to take over Kahndaq and is the descendant of its former ruler, King Ahk-Ton.
He was portrayed by Marwan Kenzari, who also played Ahk-Ton in the same movie, Jafar in the live-action Aladdin remake and Raymond Westerling in The East.
Biography[]
Ishmael was a friend to Adrianna and Karim, helping them to search the Crown of Sabbac. He was thought to be killed by the rubble when the temple collapses after Black Adam was freed and killed the Intergang members. He survived the fall and was revealed to be the leader of them all along.
Ishmael starts searching for the crown, eventually came across Karim and Amon. Ishmael holds them at gunpoint and demands the crown from Amon, Karim gets shot by him and Amon was kidnapped by him. He took him to the hideout, awaiting for the Justice Society to hand him the crown. Just when they gave him the crown in exchange of Amon's life, Ishmael reveals himself to be the last descendant of King Ahk-Ton and taking his rightful place as the ruler of Kahndaq. Just when he tries to kill Amon, Adam obliterates the mines and killed Ishmael.
However, after Adam surrenders himself to JSA and accepts his imprisonment, Ishmael was resurrected as the demonic tyrant known as Sabbac, and aimed to unleash Hell on Earth. He starts off by overwhelming the JSA and summons his legion of hell in Kahndaq. Dr. Fate sacrifices his life to save Hawkman and the others. Before he dies, he used an astral projection to reawaken Adam in his confinement, stating the world needs him. Just as Sabbac is about to finish the JSA, Black Adam appears and fights with him, then ultimately destroys Sabbac by ripping him in half, ending his reign of terror and avenging Fate in the process.
Personality[]
While he initially appeared to be a loyal citizen of Kahndaq who would gladly join Adrianna's resistance, in truth Ishmael had been acting as Intergang's mole the entire time. He feels no hesitance about killing his countrymen, even deciding to shoot Amon who was no older than 13.
Ishmael is driven solely by the urge to reclaim his lost heritage and become the new tyrant of Kahndaq, even allying himself with demonic forces that would bring Armageddon.
Despite him being power hungry, he's a good actor, intelligent and expert leader, as he manipulated Adrianna to gain her trust to find the crown of Sabbac, not blowing any cover and faked his death, he also found out that the only way to be Sabbac is to get killed by Teth-Adam using his magic so he could be transported to Hell as mentioned by Adrianna. And he also founded Intergang to rule Kahndaq and ordered his men to not blow his cover, tho he's willing to kill them if they fail him, as evident when he killed the leader of Raptor Team for punching him in the face instead of making it real.
Like his ancestor, He's very tyrannical as he released The Legions of Hell to take over Khandaq and probably the entire world after becoming Sabbac and taking over the throne. He's also vengeful as he hated Teth-Adam for killing his ancestor, king Ahk-Ton, as he wants to kill Teth-Adam to avenge him.
He is never shown to be anything more than a despicable excuse for a human being, to the point where even the Justice Society ultimately see his life as devoid of value and were willing to let Teth-Adam destroy him.

Trivia[]
- This is the first live-action debut of Sabbac.
- He resembles various stereotypical depictions of Satan, one of the demon lords he gets his powers from. Also, the inverted pentagram on his torso is commonly associated with Satanism.
- The portrayal of Sabbac in Black Adam was criticized by fans and audiences alike for reasons ranging from a lack of characterization to sub-par CGI.
- In the tie-comic titled Justice Society Files, it was Bruno Mannheim who is shown as the leader of Intergang like in the comic. It was however ambiguous as to what he gains from helping Ishmael obtain the crown of Sabbac, but considering his appearance was obscure, it was unknown if he was the same individual as Ishmael or a separate individual with an unknown motive.
