"Empty your hearts. To kill these demons we have to becomes demons."—Sadafumi Tamo to the other Shiki hunters.
Sadafumi Tamo is a minor antagonist in the manga Shiki, and the main antagonist of its anime adaption's first OVA Twentieth Mourning and Offense.
He is an especially brutal and cruel hunter who leads a group of humans through the irrigation tunnels below Sotoba to exterminate the Shiki nesting there after the death of his father. During the mass slaughter he encourages the other hunters to be needlessly cruel, and even murders other humans who have been bitten based simply on an incorrect hunch.
He is voiced by Eiji Miyashita in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Jonathan Brooks (who also voiced Foxy the Silver Fox in One Piece) in the English version.
Biography[]
After the murder of his father during the war between humans and Shiki in Sotoba, Sadafumi and a group of hunters head to the irrigation pipeline to hunt Shiki. Once inside, the hunters begin recalling who the Shiki they find were in their prior lives. Sadafumi tells them not to, as they're no longer human.
When the humans in the pipeline hesitate hunt Shiki of their former friends, he leads the charge, starting to kill the Shiki himself. Once the others begin to warm up to hunting, he assists them, taking down each Shiki one by one.
During a surprise attack from a few Shiki, two of his human comrades get bitten. Assuming they've been turned already, when the others are unable to recall Ozaki's instructions that humans are not transformed upon a mere bite, he casually has them murderer as well. He jams a sharp pipe through the first one's throat, and has the second restrained and murdered as well.
During the last phase of the tunnel hunt, he personally pulls the final few Shiki out of the pipes, and even stabs them to make them submit. After hearing that the hunters have run out of stakes, he ties up the Shiki and leaves them to burn up in the sun, instead of putting them out of their misery. This leaves his fellow hunter Hasegawa to grab his pipe and to mercifully spare the Shiki from suffering himself.
Trivia[]
- Sadafumi blames the Shiki for his father's death, and says it is proof that they're monsters who deserve no mercy. Ironically, he was shot by a human: Seishirou Kirishiki.
- Sadafumi is meant to represent the very worst of humanity and the hunters. Even the ruthless Tomio Ookawa wanted to ensure the death of his son was quick and painless, and mostly staked Shiki in a single blow, while Sadafumi was happy to leave them burning alive in the sun. This is meant to contrast the OVA's protagonist Hasegawa, who represents the best side of humanity, as he empathizes with the Shiki and shows them mercy.
- Despite being a human, he serves as the main antagonist of the OVA, as he was the biggest threat to both the OVA's Shiki deuteragonist Nao, and human protagonist Hasegawa. His recklessly ruthless behavior endangered both Shiki and humans alike, and the Shiki in the pipes were greatly outmatched.
