The character is portrayed by Patsy Kensit.
Biography[]
Sadie King first arrived in Emmerdale via helicopter on the day her father-in-law, Tom King, celebrated his 65th birthday in the village in May 2004.
Upon arrival, she received a pleasant greeting from Tom and the rest of the villagers - one of whom included her husband Jimmy, also Tom's eldest son in the King Family. From then onwards it was clear that Sadie meant business, as she swiftly threw her weight around within the King family and their business empire called King & Sons.
However, it became clear that Sadie would not be happy with Jimmy who was keen for a family and she was not. So much so that Sadie had begun to take contraceptives injections behind his back. When Jimmy eventually found out about this, he threatened to divorce Sadie until she managed to woo him into forgiving her.
Soon enough, Sadie instigated a rivalry with Tom's secretary Charity Dingle after learning that the pair have begun a relationship behind her back. She soon became unhappy when Tom proposed to Charity and they planned on getting married in early January 2005 at the village church.
Determined to not be supplanted by Charity as the female authority in the King family, Sadie resolved to sabotage the wedding at all costs. She conspired with Charity's distant cousin and estranged lover, Cain Dingle, to trap Charity in a romantic lustful clinch so images of the event could be exposed to Tom before the ceremony took place. On Tom and Charity's wedding day, Sadie exposed the images to Tom and he humiliated Charity before jilting her at the alter. This subsequently led to a fight between the Dingle and King families respectively.
In the aftermath of the wedding disaster, Charity found out what Sadie had done and swore revenge on her. Charity soon took her chance by seducing Jimmy and recorded their romantic liaisons - during which Jimmy confessed Sadie's own scheming and the extent of their problematic marriage. Then on Jimmy's 40th birthday, Charity arrived and exposed everything to Tom by playing the tapes - thereby exposing Sadie’s actions to the entire King family. Sadie attempted to attack Charity in retaliation, but she failed when Charity punched Sadie in the face. Charity thereafter departed the village in triumph, while a heartbroken Tom disowned Sadie for her actions; Jimmy, who was briefly casted out of the family by Tom for his fling with Charity behind his back, later demanded a divorce when their marriage totally collapsed beyond repair.
However, Sadie was unwilling to accept defeat and sought to reclaim her status in the King family business. She steadily achieved this by securing a port of land that Tom wanted for his housing development plan and then forcing him to give her 10% control of the King empire in exchange for the land. To do this, however, Sadie hired Cain to break into the Kings' office and steal Jimmy's laptop that contained all the information on their development plans.
By then, Sadie has grown passionately close with Cain as their secret liaison gradually developed into a lustful romance between the pair. At one point Sadie discarded her feelings for Cain and instead embarked on a lengthy tryst with fellow bad boy Robert Sugden, but her dalliance with the latter was eventually discovered by Robert's estranged brother and nemesis Andy. It was then Andy exposed their secret to his former wife Katie, who had only just planned on marrying Robert after they got engaged not long afterwards. Katie later confronted Sadie and broke up with Robert before leaving the village for a while; Robert then rejected Sadie over her coldness in the matter. Sadie thereafter rekindled her affections with Cain, but she once again dismissed him and he retaliated by killing her beloved dog Damon.
As time went on, Sadie secured further strong positioning in the King family by compromising their rival Zoe Tate amid her plans to flee the country from her trial of attempted murder. She blackmailed Zoe into selling the Tates' manor Home Farm at a reduced price for Tom King, thus earning her more of his respect and love. However, Zoe was ultimately found not guilty of attempted murder and departed the village after causing a gas leak and explosion at Home Farm to get payback on the King family for stealing away the Tates' residence.
Nevertheless, Sadie’s success began to pay off for both the King family and herself. But that all changed towards the end of the year when Tom began contemplating on retirement after his youngest son Max King gets killed in a road accident. It soon transpired that Sadie has been harbouring romantic feelings for Jimmy's estranged brother Matthew King and that the two had previously slept together while she was still married to Jimmy years ago. As Tom planned to retire and let Matthew take over the reins of the company, Sadie looked set to rule the roost once more. But then Jimmy discovered their romance and set out to end any hope of Matthew and Sadie being together by informing Tom. In response, Tom told Matthew that he had to choose between his future as heir of the King empire or Sadie. A torn Matthew chose the business over Sadie, prompting her to flee the village.
When Sadie resurfaces, she has become engaged to the wealthy Alasdair Sinclair and clashed with his mother Rosemary when she objected to the matter. But their marriage prospects were abruptly put on hold Matthew cannot let go of his love for Sadie and storms into the wedding. Despite exchanging vows with Alasdair and marrying him just moments ago, Sadie leaves him for Matthew when he professes his undying love for her. This resulted in Tom disowning Matthew after he chose Sadie over them.
Soon afterwards, Sadie planned to extract control of Rosemary's family estate in light of marrying Alasdair just moments before their break-up. Rosemary refuses to give in to Sadie’s demand and even threatens to have her marriage with Alasdair annulled in order to avoid paying her a settlement, but Sadie tricks her into thinking the marriage has been consummated. This forces an agreement in which Rosemary will give Sadie the family's most valuable business in exchange for the annulment. The papers are signed over dinner at Oakwell Hall, with Alasdair himself present alongside his brother Grayson and the latter's wife Perdy as they all appear to see Rosemary give her family estate to Sadie and Matthew themselves. However, once Sadie's signature is finalised, Rosemary smugly reveals that the business is worthless and Sadie attempts to attack her before getting restrained by Matthew. It is then Rosemary claims to have served Sadie’s horse, Cossack, for dinner between them; Sadie is horrified before she and Matthew leave in disgust, although it later turns out that Rosemary lied about it just to hurt Sadie in revenge for her actions.
Despite their setback with Rosemary and her family, Sadie still plans to secure her financial future with Matthew now they have become a business power couple. She soon convinces him into scheming behind his family's back by pursuing a lucrative deal with their business competitor Don Clough. This works successfully as they outbid Tom and Jimmy in buying Don Clough's haulage firm, partly as a result of tricking Tom's other son Carl into getting false information on the contract. However, Matthew's success with Sadie causes both Tom and Jimmy to resent him even further for siding with the very woman who is tearing their family apart.
When Tom retaliates by replacing Matthew with Jimmy as heir apparent of the family business, Sadie resorted to sabotage the Kings' new showhome development out of revenge. She conspired with Cain once more to accomplish this and paid him to damage the electrics within the showhouse to cause trouble for Jimmy, which put pressure on his relationship with Tom to the point of having the repair job botched job in order to speed up the progress. However, Sadie's actions resulted in the showhome exploding on the day of its launch and it consequently led to the deaths of three people - young mother Dawn Woods, local pensioner Noreen Bell, and estate agent David Brown. In the midst of the chaos, Sadie was trapped inside the house with Jimmy at the time of the explosion and he was badly injured. He begged Sadie to save his life, but she instead opted to kill him by striking him on the head with a brick. Both were rescued in the end, although Jimmy survived and soon exposed both Sadie's involvement in the showhome explosion and her attempt to kill him to Matthew just as he discovered her collusion with Cain. Horrified by the extent of Sadie's actions and her lack of empathy at the death of Dawn in particular, Matthew furiously ended their relationship.
Afterwards, Sadie planned one final revenge on the Kings and teamed up with Cain to kidnap Tom for a £2.5 million ransom. She even played along as if she was a hostage herself in an effort to collect the ransom for Tom's life. During the hostage situation, Cain appeared to shoot Sadie with a shotgun and she seemed to die a bloody death. This prompted the Kings to pay the ransom to save Tom's life. However, it was revealed that Sadie's death had been staged and she met up with a triumphant Cain on the tarmac of an airport with their money. But then Cain betrayed Sadie by abandoning her on their getaway escape route and taking all of the money with him. He did it partly as revenge for Sadie upsetting his daughter Debbie and paying her best friend Jasmine Thomas to abort their unborn child without his consent, which left him heartbroken and enraged by Sadie’s deception. Sadie was last seen looking in disappointment as Cain flew away on his private plane.
Sadie would later be referenced on multiple occasions during her absence. In 2007, Matthew received flowers and a card from Sadie for Tom's funeral after his untimely murder on his Christmas wedding day to Rosemary last year; Matthew responded by disposing of the flowers. Sadie would again be referenced a year later at Rosemary's funeral and then the following year just months after Matthew's own funeral. When Cain returned to the village in April 2009, he was confronted by Jimmy and Carl over their father's kidnapping ordeal; Cain promptly taunted the pair about it before sarcastically asking Jimmy about Sadie by saying to him "Heard from your ex-wife recently?".
