I'm going to find other people like us—people with powers. I spent my whole life thinking I was the only one, knowing I could never tell anyone because they would look at me like that. But now, there's you. You and me—a time traveler and a shapeshifter. Imagine what we could do. And who cares if I'm just a silly little girl whose mom needs to show her how the world works? Because now, it works however I want it to. Stay here. Keep your job, your life, whatever irresistible glory Caledon can offer you. But I have to know... When I come back, are you going to stand with me, Max? Are we in this together?

Safiya Llewellyn-Fayyad, better known as Safi or The Shapeshifter, is the main antagonist in the 2024 episodic video game Life Is Strange: Double Exposure.

She is Max Caulfield's best friend at Caledon University and a shapeshifter with the ability to transform into anyone she has met. After Max discovers Safi mysteriously dead, she learns to navigate two timelines—one where Safi is alive and another where she is not. As Alive Safi’s powers grow unstable, she becomes delusional and power-hungry, seeing herself as a superior being and seeking out revenge against those who have wronged her.

She is voiced by Olivia AbiAssi.

Biography[]

Chapter One: "Still Life"[]

Safi is introduced breaking into an abandoned bowling alley with Max, where they joke around and explore. She mentions a friend obsessed with the place despite never going inside. While Max takes photos, Safi helps her get a better shot by bringing a ladder. When a large mobile crashes, Safi saves Max by pulling her out of the way. Shaken but amused, they head to the Snapping Turtle bar at Caledon University. There, Safi teases Max about her interest in Amanda and encourages her to make a move. While Max speaks with Amanda, Safi jokingly suggests a cheesy pickup line, which can later appear on the bar’s "Worst Pickup Lines" board.

Moses eventually joins them and invites the girls to watch the meteor shower from the observatory roof. Safi buys expensive champagne with Yasmin’s credit card. At the observatory, they drink, listen to music, and watch the shower. Safi hints at good news—a publisher is interested in her poems—but only reveals it if Max convinces her. She later leaves after receiving a phone call and is shot and killed by an unseen murderer, later revealed to be an alternate version of Max. Max later meets the alternate Safi in the Living World and embraces her.

Chapter Two: "Penumbra"[]

Max speaks with alternate Safi and her mother, Yasmin, in the Living World. Their conversation is cut short when they discover Safi's car has been vandalized.

Chapter Three: "Spin"[]

Safi uses her powers to impersonate Amanda and talk to Max after her conversation with Yasmin. When she learns Max is digging into her past, she becomes furious. Later, she shapeshifts into Max to search her place for information but is caught. Max chases her to the Overlook, where they fall onto an ice lake. When the ice cracks, Safi falls in, but Max saves her. Max then uses her powers to switch the ice with the one from the alternate reality, revealing their supernatural abilities to each other.

Chapter Four: "Diptych"[]

Back at Max's house, the two share their powers and learn Lucas was responsible for Maya's death. They form a plan to take him down at the Krampus party, recruiting Moses from both timelines, Vinh, and possibly Gwen to help. The plan works, but Safi discovers her mother was behind the cancellation of her book deal, with Gwen as her accomplice. Enraged, Safi confronts Yasmin at the Overlook, using Lucas's gun that Max gave her. When Max tries to intervene, she shoots Yasmin in the shoulder. As Safi’s powers spiral out of control, a storm forms behind them.

Chapter Five: "Decoherence"[]

Max and Safi are sent back to the moment where Max is meant to shoot Safi, but they bring the storm with them into the Living World. When Max refuses to kill Safi, they search for a way to restore reality. They enter the tornado, ending up in a transformed reality caused by their unstable powers. Though separated briefly, they reunite, take a selfie, and return to the real world, merging both timelines. Safi decides to seek out others with powers to protect them from the outside world, starting with Diamond Washington, who is hinted to have powers. Max can choose whether or not to join her.

Personality[]

Safi is a charismatic and curious person driven by a strong desire to connect with others and understand their true selves. She has a knack for drawing people in with her charm, while subtly probing into their emotions and motivations. She genuinely cares for Max, supporting her and encouraging her to open up in Vermont.

However, Safi's curiosity crosses boundaries, becoming invasive. This is shown when she rifles through Max’s wallet to find a photo of a blue-haired girl (Chloe Price), disregarding Max's privacy. Though her actions stem from a need for connection, they reveal her manipulative side, as she sometimes uses what she learns to gain the upper hand.

Her personality darkens after discovering that her mother, Yasmin, was responsible for Maya’s death. This betrayal fuels her anger and pushes her to become more ruthless. She cuts ties with Yasmin and becomes determined to unite people with powers like hers and Max’s, believing it will bring her the recognition and validation she longs for. Safi’s growing obsession makes her willing to sacrifice relationships in pursuit of her goals.

Appearance[]

Safi has dark hair, dark eyes, and an olive complexion, suggesting her Arabic heritage, likely from her mother’s side. She often wears her hair tied back in a ponytail with a red hair tie or concealed under a hat, leaving a couple of tendrils to frame her face.

She accessorizes with small silver hoop earrings, a necklace featuring a red stone, and several rings. A small silver stud pierces her left nostril. When indoors, Safiya typically wears a dark button-down shirt, dark jeans, boots, and dark nail polish. Outdoors, she is seen in a grey hat, gloves, and a white puffer coat with red accents on the shoulders and neck.
