One's lament is nothing to compare to the pleasure of protecting civilians.
~ Saigiku Jouno stating his reason of being part of the Hunting Dogs.

Saigiku Jouno is one of the major antagonists of the manga and anime series Bungo Stray Dogs. He is a fictionalized version of the Japanese author with the same name.

Jouno is one of the 5 powerful members of the military unit, the Hunting Dogs, infamously known for his own tactic of extracting information from others by torturously interrogating them to the point they squirm, much to his amusement. Prior to being recruited by the squad captain Ōchi Fukuchi, he was part of a criminal organization as an executive.

He is voiced by Yuki Kaji (who voices Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan) in the Japanese version, and by Adam McArthur in the English version of the anime.

Appearance[]

Jouno is a young man with closed eyes (due to his blindness), pale skin and a white hair with red tips. His outfit includes a standard red (army green in the manga version) uniform of the Hunting Dogs and a bell tassel earring pierced on his right ear.

Personality[]

At a first glance, Jouno has a calmest personality, always seen with a smile on his face. Compared to this, however, he is rather intolerant with injustice, as he hides a fierce temper behind the mask filled with great composure. For example, at the horse race, Jouno calmly arrested Osamu Dazai for the latter's past crimes as an executive of the Port Mafia, in which the former doesn't take injustice too lightly. Jouno has a habit of torturing people as a means of extracting information from them by an intimidating interrogation, as well as making verbally threatening remarks towards others like Doppo Kunikida, with his ideals that are compared to a hot-air balloon. In other words, he is a sadistic individual, like his vice-captain Teruko Okura. Regarding his comrade Tetchou Suehiro, Jouno is easily irritated by the former's odd personality that involves eating combined foods that are similar in color and observing an ant colony for eight hours straight. Despite his sadism and previous occupation as a mafia executive, Jouno takes pride of his true intention: protecting the innocent people from criminals with the bright smile on his face.

Ability[]

Priceless Tears: Jouno's ability allows him to control and turn his own body into particles that can pass through small spaces such as door gaps and AC vents. In terms of appearance, it is stated that it looks like an afterglow that cannot be pierced by a bullet nor sliced by a sword. The downside of his ability is that he won't return back into his normal self entirely if his particles are burnt with fire.

Trivia[]

  • His birthday is on September 24.
  • Jouno and Dazai are similar to each other, as both previously worked as executives from criminal organizations until they eventually became allies of justice who recently protects the lives of innocent people.
  • Although not explicitly mentioned, his facial appearance and hair color visually resemble that of a kitsune mask, including his earring that resembles its bell tassel. In terms of negative traits, kitsunes are known to be mischievous, which mirrors Jouno's sadistic tendencies against wanted criminals, especially Kunikida and Yosano.
