~ Saint Germain

Count Saint Germain is a major character in the Netflix animated series Castlevania, which is based on the video game franchise of the same name. After debuting in the third season as a supporting character, Germain acted as one of the secondary antagonists in the fourth and final season. He is based off of the character of the same name from the video games.

He was voiced by Bill Nighy, who also plays Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Viktor in the Underworld franchise, Rattlesnake Jake in Rango, General Fallon in Jack the Giant Slayer, and Howard Clifford in Detective Pikachu.

Biography[]

An enigmatic and powerful mage who claimed to be immortal, Saint Germain travelled extensively and advised many rulers and tyrants across the world. He eventually met and fell deeply in love with a woman, although in their pursuit of knowledge she was forever lost in the realms of the Infinite Corridor. Germain spent the rest of his days searching for a way to reunite with his lover. His quest inevitably sent him down a dark path, due in part to the manipulations of the elemental being Death.

Death convinced Germain that his only path towards reuniting with his lover was by helping to resurrect the powerful Vampire Dracula. However, Death ultimately wanted Dracula returned for his own machinations. Having been tricked by his co-conspirator, Saint Germain helped his old ally, the monster slayer Trevor Belmont, defeat the elemental menace and survive the encounter. Shortly thereafter, Germain died without seeing his desire fulfilled.

Personality[]

When he is first introduce, Saint Germain presents a charlatan-like behavior towards others around him. He tends to say and know things that is outside of his Era leaving many confused. For example: he mentions toilet paper out of nowhere towards the Judge, who is confused of what that is. Due to his odd interactions with others, many believed he is a traveling scholar or trickster but in reality Saint Germain is a knowledgeable alchemist that is well verse of things that would be heretical for the time period like magic and science. He comes off as condescending, arrogant, and impatient, in which annoys many people that he interacts. Even Trevor Belmont does not like his interactions with the man. Germain shows his arrogance when he wants to have a power of a god in order to control the infinite corridor with the rebis, using many innocent souls in the process.

Despite this, he does have a level of humanity in which his biggest goal is to find his partner and confess his love for her. Saint Germain was terrified to see a night creature being used underneath the church in the priory and express his concern to Trevor, Sypha, and the Judge. Despite his horrendous actions in season 4, he felt immense regret of killing people for his goals and sighs when he has to use and kill more people in the village of Danesti, expressing more regret. Saint Germain was even manipulated by Varney, who is revealed to be Death in disguise and is shock that his actions was being controlled by the entity. As a form of redemption, he had Trevor destroy the rebis preventing Death to continue his plans and saved Trevor by sending him to the infinite corridor, where he would return home safely.

Trivia[]

  • Saint Germain, along with his time-traveling videogame counterpart of the same name, both share the name of the enigmatic figure with 2 known references:
    • Saint Germain is likely a reference to the hero of Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's well-known book series The Saint-Germain Chronicles. In turn, the Count Saint-Germain character is based off a true historical figure, Comte Rakoczy de Saint-Germain. St. Germain lived most of his life in London and was an active occultist, philosopher and composer. Much of his origins are shrouded in mystery. He claimed to be centuries old and a son of Transylvanian prince Francis II Rákóczi.
      • Coincidentally, the union of Romania with Bukovina in 1919 was ratified by a document named the "Treaty of Saint Germain". Bukovina is one of the significant locations in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula.
    • Saint Germain is one of the "Ascended" Masters praised in the Church of Universal Triumphant ("C.U.T." for short).
    • In the episode "You must sacrifice" Saint Germain's video game design is reference in a flashback for the character.
