Villain Overview

Saitō, formerly known as Rígr Stafford, is one of the main antagonists of the dark fantasy manga and light novel series Seraph of the End. He is one of the second progenitors and certainly among the oldest vampires. He is the founder and leader of the infamous organization known as the Hyakuya Sect in order to face the First Progenitor, Shikama Dōji’s Organization, the Emperor's Demon.

Appearance[]

Saitō is a tall slim man, mostly seen in a formal black business suit with a white shirt and necktie underneath. He has black hair of ear-length that can generally be seen parted from his right side at the front of his face. He also often expresses calmness in his eyes.

Although Saitō is indeed a vampire, the typical traits of his kind are concealed to hide his true identity as a blood sucker. The common traits, sharp ears, red irises, and fangs are covered with cosmetic accessories to make himself to appear as a regular middle-aged man on the surface. Fake human ears are used to covre his own and had his eyes covered with a pair of eye contact to hide the true color of his irises.

Personality[]

Saitō overallappearance

Overall appearance.

Saitō is overall portrayed as a calm, silent individual that fears seemingly nothing, even against Shikama Doji, the first vampire and other progenitors who he deals with single handedly. He acts cool in a lot of circumstances while plotting to reach any of his goals, not caring about potential harms or that certain obstacles can impact him. He loves toying and acts playfully around those like Guren Ichinose who threatened to harm and even kill him, to which he simply continuously expresses his usual attitude, knowing that he holds far more superiority that can easily overpower him, a human.

As it is unknown if it is an act or not, Saitō does expresses surprise from time to time. Openly showing a startled expression, he came as unpredicted to witness the stab caused by Ferid Bathory’s Sinful Key.

Outside of dealing with serious individuals, Saitō offered money for a child Mikaela Hyakuya to buy ice cream as he stays by his side. As with Yuichiro Hyakuya, who at the time was also a young child, he had to drag the boy after repeatedly acting against him, while stating that children at the orphanage that was about to parent him, had similar harsh experiences with their parents as Yu witnessed physical abuse from them and even attempted to kill their own son.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Vampire Transmutation: As a former second progenitor of the vampires, Saitō has one of the notable abilities and that is the power to turn a human being into a vampire, which ordinary vampires are not able to do. A few examples of vampires would be Ferid Bathory and Crowley Eusford.
  • Body Modification: Due to having volunteered himself as a subject experiment for many organizations of humans including the Thousand Nights or the Hyakuya Sect, Saitō has gained a wide range of abilities that brought him to rival the other second progenitor Urd Geales. Urd noted how much weaker he was in the past in contrast to him but this was no longer the case due to the experiments that his body had received.

It is also seemingly possible for his clothing to be part of his body as his attire has also seen to restore itself despite having received some damage.

Isn't in impressive? Though it's all smoke and mirrors, I'm afraid.
~ Saito talking about his ability to manipulate smokes.
  • Smoke Transformation: Saitō has the ability to morph his body into smoke and dust at will. Not only possessing this property within his body, any injuries that cause smokes to be released is said to have highly harmful substances in it that can give potential impact on almost anyone who attacks him as they absorb it.

His ability to transform into smoke and dust adds to his enigmatic nature, and attackers who cause injuries releasing this substance from his form suffer negative consequences.

Isn't it amusing? It is a curse that I have been working on for centuries, with human help.
~ Saitō talking about his chains to Urd.
  • Chain Manipulation: Vampires are largely known to wield various weapons in battle such with the majority of them being swords. Saitō is one of the rare ones to fight without wielding anything as chains can be fired out of his body out of anywhere, like his back, and head (similarly to Tenri Hiragi). Saitō’s chains are cursed and are controlled with magic as mentioned by himself which he actually had been working on alongside humans.

When he was beheaded by The First, his head, in a high distance in the air from his body, was connected by a single chain to the rest of his body, displaying that he is perfectly fine as he continues to talk with the rest of his body still moving. He can also use the chains to walk for him as it gets released from his back. Even a single one of the metal objects is relatively challenging for almost any opponents that he faces. The chain can be fired like spears at an alarming speed at his targets with a fixed point, strong enough to pierce bones. Nevertheless, his metal tentacles cannot stop certain vampires such as Lest Karr who ran directly towards him. Moreover, with all the chains released out of him, this makes him highly challenging at dealing whether anyone is fighting him at close or distanced range. The chains can also absorb the energy of his victims to give it for his own advantage upon taking contact with, with a simple touch or a hard penetration. With this, the chain can also be altered into beasts of the apocalypses, various animals released by him, such as lions, wolves, goats, panther, bull, and even dragons with the head of the animal heads connected with a serpent neck.
