~ Salome. |
Salome is a major character in A Certain Magical Index: New Testament, serving as the titular main antagonist of the Salome Arc.
She is an infamous mass murderer and a member of the Kamisato Faction, as well as the non-blood related younger sister of Kakeru Kamisato. She's also a powerful magician that uses Celtic-based magic, though considered troublesome by the rest of the faction due to her demented personality.
She's voiced by Kaede Hondo.
Appearance[]
Salome is a young girl with long silver hair that's styled as buns on both sides of her head. She has pink eyes and tanned skin. She wears two translucent hooded raincoats on top of one another with nothing underneath them and has a small plastic pink pocket watch on a thick string around her neck. She's normally seen barefooted and carries a large duffle bag around with her.
Personality[]
Among the members of the Kamisato Faction, Salome is considered the most unhinged and dangerous out of all of them. She's an extremely sadistic and merciless individual who is quite willing to kill people and takes delight in hunting down targets of value, showing a clear lack of mental stability. She views herself as a predator looking for a challenge, which is why she goes after more challenging prey like notorious criminals and evil end-of-the-world cults. Salome is extremely reckless and shows no concern for her own well-being, being perfectly willing to provoke powerful individuals or put her life at risk by sacrificing and replacing parts of her own body.
Salome is aware of her own insanity and openly embraces her reputation as a deranged mass murderer to some extent. However, Salome is smart enough to realize that she might have to answer for her crimes one day and thus follows a unique set of rules for herself. She refuses to go after defenseless people, such as innocent civilians, however, this is not out of morals but rather she considers it to be "too boring". She also won't kill anybody if it wouldn't benefit her brother in some way. She also recognizes when others are also crazy, in a similar or different way to her, even when they themselves might not be aware.
Like the rest of the Kamisato Faction, Salome has feelings for Kakeru and is deeply in love with. Despite growing up together and calling herself his little sister, Salome and Kakeru aren't actually blood related. She states that she'll do anything for Kakeru, including murder. While she does what she does for her brother's sake, Salome isn't blindly devoted to him like the other members of the Kamisato Faction and will go against his wishes if she deems it as necessary. She also holds great contempt for the girls of the faction, mostly due to their closeness with Kakeru but also because she realizes that their presense is causing Kakeru's personality to change. Upon coming to this conclusion, she swiftly decides killing them all will solve the problem.
Furthermore, despite her self-admitted mental issues, Salome does truly care about Kakeru and is also one of the few reasonable members of the faction that can see that he is being warped by World Rejecter and his large harem, leading him to take more morally dubious choices in his conflict with Touma Kamijou. She willingly joins forces with Touma in order to try and return him to normal. Kakeru points out that Salome's personality has considerably mellowed out since meeting Touma, though she still retains her murderous tendencies.
Biography[]
Salome has known and looked up to Kakeru Kamisato since they were kids, but she is a monster who can't get along with normal human society. Salome had broken even before Kakeru had gotten the World Rejector from the Magic Gods of Gremlin, and has hunted down and killed hopeless doomsday cults, drug dealers and other types of criminals since she was young, feeling a sort of thrill when taking their lives. Due to her demeted behavior, the other girls of the Kamisato Faction and even Kakeru himself decided to detain her before their journey to Academy City. However, Salome escaped her imprisonment and traveled to Academy City, desiring to help Kakeru by picking a fight with the Kamijou Faction.
Powers and Abilites[]
Powers[]
- External Offering: A type of Celtic sacrifice magic and Salome's main offensive technique. It allows Salome to destroy and offer up weapons to a god, in her case the sea god Manannán, in order to to receive his blessing. However, she can only do so if she destroys the weapon with her body. Because of this, she can't absorb a weapon if it's too powerful for her to destroy. Things that don't really function as a weapon are also ineffective. She can keep absorbing power from lesser weapons in order to increase her overall strength and become capable of destroying more powerful weapons or maintain her chain, building up a continuous chain of destruction that rapidly and indefinitely increases her power. However, if she doesn't sacrifice a weapon within three minutes of the last sacrifice, her "chain" will break and the absorbed power will vanish. Salome can freely rearrange and combine the attributes of the weapons she has absorbed to modify her attacks, being able to produce invisible attacks with various attributes by simply swinging her hand. The power, range, and shape of these attacks changes as Salome's chain of absorbed weapons increases.
- Iron Sand Sword: After absorbing Mikoto Misaka's iron sand, Salome produced an invisible Iron Sand Sword, which she used to defend against Mikoto's other attacks.
- Flamethrower + Katana: An attack that looks like if a ton of sharp Japanese swords shot out with the force of a flamethrower.
- Tear gas + Sledgehammer: A pressure attack that scatters a blinding smokescreen that contains physical pressure.
- Explosive + Longbow + Electric guitar: An explosive acoustic weapon that blows out the target’s eardrums just by plucking the strings.
- Stun gun + Water gun + Bullet + Hammer throw: A giant anti-materiel sniper bullet that’s ballistic path bends complexly like electricity running along a body of water.
- Internal Offering: A type of Celtic sacrifice magic. Salome has abandoned her body using a chemical cyborg treatment and she has offered up her flesh and blood to her god in order to become a cyborg and drastically raise her physical abilities, granting her enhanced strength, speed and durability. Salome refers to her body as her "battle body", and is later implied to have at least one spare body.
- Emergency Sacrifice: Since her body is artificial, it counts as a weapon. Thus, Salome is able to sacrifice parts of her artificial body like her organs to keep her chain going when there are no more weapons available.
Abilities[]
- Gifted Intellect: Salome is quite intelligent, possessing keen intuition of various murder methods. As a child, Salome became a prolific mass murderer that attacked doomsday cults or divers carrying packages from the sea at night and created one or two hundred open murder cases under the police's nose. She also has some mastery of magic, primarily inspired by Celtic mythology. Salome, as a magician, has to determine what an enemy’s spell is and find a way to turn it back at them when defending, has to predict what kinds of counterattacks would come and rearrange her spell accordingly when attacking and has to think 100-200 steps ahead amidst constantly changing surroundings in magical battles.
- Master Martial Artist: Salome is an extremely skilled and powerful martial artist, being considered the Kamisato Faction's strongest fighter who could walk right into and single-handedly destroy the White House. She was capable of replicating Yuiitsu Kihara's imitation of Amata's lethal technique in a very short time, using it to save Touma Kamijou's life when Yuiitsu managed to use it on him by countering the bubbles with her own shockwaves.
Trivia[]
