He is war chief of the White Legs, and the worst butcher of them all. The tribes he has crushed are many. The warriors he has slain, countless.
~ Waking Cloud describe Salt-Upon-Wounds
Foolish outman - You best White Legs, you think? By my spear you die!
~ Salt-Upon-Wounds upon being challenged by the Courier.

Salt-Upon-Wounds is the main antagonist of the Fallout: New Vegas DLC, Honest Hearts.

He is the ruthless tribal and chief of the White Legs tribes who seeks to earn his people passage into Caesar's Legion by fulfilling Caesar's order to exterminate the Burned Man, Joshua Graham. Known for his sheer brutality, Salt-Upon-Wounds earned his name by pouring salt on the lands of conquered enemies, ensuring nothing can grow there easily again.

He is voiced by Adam Gifford.

Biography[]

Salt-Upon-Wounds is the war chief of the White Legs situated in Salt Lake City, and an associate of Caesar's Legion. At some point before or around 2281, Salt-Upon-Wounds laid siege to the town of New Canaan in Utah with help from Ulysses, an emissary of the Legion. In return, the White Legs would be integrated into the Legion, unaware that Caesar had no intention of assimilating the tribe on account of how primitive they were.

Like the rest of the White Legs, Salt-Upon-Wounds venerated Ulysses for his teachings and adopted their mentor's dreadlocks hairstyle to honor him (unaware he considered it an insult). Unlike the rest of his tribe however, who used their own hair for braids, Salt-Upon-Wounds remained shaven and instead adopted dreadlocks into his own tribalistic helm, using string/wire and empty bullet casings to emulate Ulysses' braids.

After the destruction of New Canaan, Salt-Upon-Wounds and the White Legs chased the remaining survivors into Zion Valley. Two of the New Canaanites, Joshua Graham and Daniel became leaders of the Dead Horses and the Sorrows, respectively.

Sometime afterward, a Courier arrives in Zion Valley along with the Happy Trails Caravan from the Mojave Wasteland, which was then ambushed by the White Legs, killing all except for the Courier, who managed to escape the onslaught.

From here the Courier either decides to help Joshua rally the Sorrows and Dead Horses against the White Legs or help Daniel evacuate the Sorrows out of Zion:

  • If the Courier chooses to help Graham rally the tribes of Zion against the White Legs, they manage to capture Salt-Upon Wounds who begs the Courier to stop Graham's vengeful rampage against his people. The Courier can either convince Graham to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds, allow Graham to kill him or finish the tribal off themselves:
    • If spared by Graham and allowed to leave Zion, Salt-Upon-Wounds is left a shell of his former shell thanks to his humiliating defeat and is powerless when the 80's Tribe take advantage of this and destroy most of the tribe and claim the Great Salt Lake for themselves.
    • If killed by Joshua Graham, the White Legs are left broken by the defeat and flee into Wyoming, only for most of them to perish in the first winter and the survivors to break off into smaller bands to survive.
    • If killed by the Courier, the White Legs are galvanised by the death of their war chief and still pursue the New Canaanites into Colorado, only to be wiped out completely by their prey.
  • If they choose to help Daniel evacuate the Sorrows, they are confronted by Salt-Upon-Wounds and White Legs warriors blocking the exit out of Zion. From here the Courier has the choice of either challenging Salt-Upon-Wounds to personal combat and kill him or convince him the Sorrows are not worth the trouble of killing. Regardless if Salt-Upon-Wounds is killed or not, the White Legs desecrate Zion and leave it a barren wasteland.

However, due to their failure yet again to kill Joshua Graham, they are still denied entry into the Legion, marking the last hope the tribe had of survival. Regardless of whether Joshua Graham is killed or not, the White Legs, without their lifeline into the Legion, are either destroyed by their enemies or succumb to natural causes with very few survivors, with it being unlikely Salt-Upon Wounds is among them, ending the brutal tribals reign of terror for good.
