Salvatore "Sal" Maroni is a minor antagonist in Matt Reeves' 2022 superhero crime film The Batman and a major character in its 2024 spin-off series The Penguin.

Salvatore is the imprisoned leader of the Maroni family and the second most powerful mob boss in Gotham City. He has developed an ongoing feud with the Falcone Crime Family and their leader; Carmine Falcone, about who rules Gotham. Unbeknownst to both, this feud is used by Oswald Cobb aka the Penguin, who plans to manipulate the two criminal organizations for his own gain.

Early life[]

After Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered, possibly by either Carmine Falcone or Maroni himself, the two of them, and corrupt officials Mayor Don Mitchell Jr., Police Commissioner Pete Savage, and District Attorney Gil Colson turned the urban renewal fund into a money laundering front for their own use, resulting in several children, including Edward Nashton being left out on the street resulting in them becoming homeless, and Nashton later becoming the Riddler as an adult. Falcone eventually betrayed Maroni, and turned into an informant for the GCPD. Orchestrating Maroni's arrest, Falcone took full control of Gotham City.

The Batman[]

Sal Maroni is only briefly seen on a television monitor in Bruce's Batcave, being taken away by police officers during his arrest. At one point Bruce Wayne discovers that his father asked Falcone to intimidate a reporter into silence, Riddler himself claimed that he had the reporter killed, to which Falcone admits doing so and claims (likely falsely) that the reporter was on Maroni's payroll. Falcone hints at the possibility that Maroni may have been behind Bruce's parents deaths, however given that Falcone is the one saying it, it could very likely have been a lie, especially since Falcone and Maroni were rivals, and Falcone got Maroni arrested, and other than his word, there is little to no evidence linking Maroni to their deaths.

The Penguin[]

He first appeared at Gothem City’s prison where he meet Oswald Cobb at table, Oz wants to make a deal with him to betraying Falcone so they can take over his empire but Sal refused during what he done and tells him to never see his smug face ever again, yet Oz says he must think it before he give him the ring, Sal shocked to see it and he told him where he got it, Oz says that he took it from Falcone before he get out of prison.

Trivia[]

This is the third live-action adaptation of Sal Maroni after The Dark Knight and Gotham.
- Maroni also made a cameo appearance in the 1995 film Batman Forever, where he is portrayed by an uncredited Dennis Paladino.
