~ Baylor trying to intimidate Amy Wagner. |
Sam Baylor is the secondary antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Turmoil". He is a high school student who rapes his classmate and then bribes her friend to testify on his behalf.
He was portrayed by Robert Gorrie.
Biography[]
Baylor was a popular high school senior who everyone wanted to be friends with. During one party for the football team, he approached a girl named Nikki Sherman and drugged her with rohypnol to lower her inhibitions. In her drugged state he was able to manipulate Nikki into taking her shirt off, which was photographed by one of his friends, but Nikki's friend Amy Wagner managed to get her out of there before he could do anything to her.
Three weeks later, Baylor invited Nikki to another party. Despite her reservations, Nikki agreed to go and ended up being enticed into a bathroom in the basement and raped by Baylor. She reported the crime and Baylor was arrested by the NYPD's Special Victims Unit, claiming the sex was consensual.
"Turmoil"[]
Baylor is prosecuted by A.D.A. Alexandra Cabot and comes up with a plan to discredit Nikki's testimony. He first tracks down the explicit photo of Nikki from the first party (which show Baylor standing next to a topless Nikki) and has one of his friends post it online, hoping to make it look like she wanted to sleep with him. He then makes plans to induce Amy Wagner to testify for him.
At Baylor's arraignment, his lawyer accuses Cabot of withholding the fact that Nikki recanted her story, leading to the case being postponed for 48 hours while the evidence is reviewed. During the delay, Baylor approaches Amy and bribes her with various expensive gifts and the promise of an invite to big parties in the future if she testifies that Nikki lied. Amy agrees and files a sworn affidavit claiming that Nikki recanted her story to SVU, who then buried her statement and convinced her to testify anyway. Meanwhile, Detective Elliot Stabler finds the explicit photo of Nikki online and notifies Cabot; the combination of the photo and the alleged recantation leads Cabot, who is already under investigation by the state bar, to drop the charges against Baylor rather than risk being disciplined for allegedly withholding evidence.
Baylor is released and immediately meets his friends to celebrate. Distraught, Nikki unsuccessfully attempts suicide; before she does so, however, she mentions to Detectives Stabler and Olivia Benson that she told Amy she wished she had never reported the rape. Suspicious, Benson and Cabot interview Amy, who admits that Baylor bribed her to testify that Nikki recanted her story. Cabot then calls Baylor to the courthouse, where she confronts him with Amy; despite Baylor's attempts to intimidate her, she agrees to testify that Baylor asked her to lie for him. Cabot tells Baylor that she is re-filing charges and adding charges of witness tampering and obstruction of justice, and that he will find out how Nikki felt when he raped her on the bathroom floor when he goes to prison.
