Sam Butcher is a minor antagonist of the 2019 Amazon tv adaptation from the comic book series The Boys.
He is the father of Billy and Lenny Butcher, whom abused his sons to "toughen" them up for a merciless world. In reality, he committed the horrific acts out of sadism and shows no remorse nor responsibility for his actions. While a minor villain, the abuse he inflicted on Billy shaped him into the violent and incorrigible individual he appears as in the series.
He was portrayed by John Noble (who also played Denethor in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ivan Yugorsky in Running Scared, and voiced Leland Monroe in L.A. Noire, Unicron in Transformers: Prime and Scarecrow in Batman: Arkham Knight) and Brendan Murray young.
Biography[]
Background[]
Nothing is known of Sam Butcher's past, but at some point he married a woman named Connie whom fathered his sons, Billy and Lenny. He frequently abused his sons during their childhood, believing that the traumatic experience would toughen them up for a merciless world. Due to the abuse he inflicted on Billy, the oldest son started to exhibit violent behavior, such as attacking his headmaster when the latter asked him did he wanted to become his father. When learning of this, Sam congratulated Billy by giving him a drink and telling Lenny to follow his brother's footsteps. Having enough of his father's abuse, Billy left home to join the military, causing Lenny to be the sole target of Sam's abuse. This resulted in Lenny taking his own life, further damaging Billy's relationship with Sam, and it's stated that he hasn't seen his father in years.
The Boys[]
Season Two[]
Following his cancer diagnosis, Connie decides to contact Billy to have him meet with his father, lying that Sam passed away. At a hotel, Sam attempts to reminisce with his son about the past, but is called out by Billy for the abuse he inflicted on him and Lenny when they were young. Sam, however, justifies his actions, believing that he "toughen" up Billy for the real world and refuses to accept responsibility for Lenny's suicide. Upon accusing Billy of causing Lenny's death, Sam is shoved to the ground and states he's proud of the monster his son's become.
Season Three[]
Sam's younger self appears in season three when Billy is put into an endless nightmare by Mindstorm, and is mentioned during Billy and Soldier Boy's conversation about their fathers.
