Sam Hawkins is the main antagonist of the S.W.A.T. episode "Hunted". He is a former LAPD sergeant and friend of SWAT officer Deacon Kay who now leads the Montrose Mercs drug crew.

He was portrayed by Alex Carter.

Biography

Early Life

Hawkins was Deacon Kay's sergeant when Deacon was a patrol officer. He spent three years undercover with the Mercs, a small-time drug crew based in North Hollywood, and gathered enough evidence to put all the gang's leaders in prison. It was his last job before he retired and went to live out in Angeles National Forest away from everybody else.

After his retirement, Hawkins was angry that the LAPD gave him nothing in return for his years of service. Looking for the respect he deserved, he rejoined the Mercs by admitting he used to be a cop and offering experience that could help them. Hawkins used his police contacts to acquire weapons and information about rival gangs which he used to revive the Mercs as a serious threat. This led to him becoming the leader of the gang.

Hunted

Hawkins uses intel he learned during his service to attack the Smiling Jackals gang. He gives the Mercs a list of known Jackals and their hideouts so that the Mercs can wipe out the gang and take their business. LAPD SWAT become suspicious after the Mercs attack the Monkey Man bar and kill four Jackals, as only the LAPD know that the Monkey Man is a Jackal front. Deacon suggests that they talk to Hawkins to gain some insight into the Mercs, not suspecting that he is behind the attack.

Deacon and team leader Hondo Harrelson visit Hawkins' cabin, but find it empty. They are ambushed by the Mercs and flee into the forest where they encounter Hawkins. Hawkins pretends that the Mercs are there for him and offers to take them to a nearby ranger's station where they can use the radio. Hondo soon becomes suspicious of Hawkins when he reveals that he knows which gang the Mercs are targeting, and the two officers just barely escape the ambush that Hawkins has led them into. Hawkins says that he would never have ordered his men to attack if he'd known Deacon was there, but now he has no choice but to find and kill them.

Hawkins returns to his cabin to dispose of the evidence left behind. He begins covering up Deacon's car with camouflage netting when he hears dispatch calling Deacon's radio and asking him to check in. Hawkins knows from his law enforcement days that backup will be called if nobody answers, so he takes the radio and checks in using Deacon's call sign to tell dispatch that they couldn't find him. Afterwards he destroys the radio and rejoins his men in searching for Hondo and Deacon, his hunting and tracking skills proving useful in tracking them down.

Eventually, the Mercs led by Hawkins corner Hondo and Deacon and Hawkins demands that they surrender. Deacon asks Hawkins what happened to him to make him a criminal, and Hawkins explains that the LAPD showed him no gratitude or respect after he retired. Just as Hondo and Deacon run out of bullets and start to give up hope, SWAT reinforcements arrive in a helicopter and Hawkins orders his men to scatter.

Hawkins is chased by Hondo and Deacon and seemingly cornered by a rock formation. Deacon and Hondo beg him to come with them, but Hawkins just tells them he has never seen this part of the forest before. Another Merc who is taking cover behind the rocks tries to kill Hondo, and Hawkins starts to pull out his gun as well, forcing Deacon to reluctantly shoot him dead.
