General Samuel "Sam" Lane, also known as just the General, is a major character in the animated superhero television series My Adventures with Superman.
He is the leader and founder of Task Force X, a secret military organization who seeks to protect the Earth from the threat of alien invasion. To this end, he became set on eliminating Superman, believing that he and Nemesis Omega, the mysterious invader behind the events of Zero Day, are one and the same.
He is voiced by Joel de la Fuente, who also portrayed Takeshi Kido in The Man in the High Castle.
History[]
Past[]
Little is known about Samuel Lane's past before the event of Zero Day. Sometime ago after his daughter's birth, he and Amanda Waller witnessed a mysterious invader and his mechanical soldiers murder their entire platoon before disappearing. The two became determined to make sure this event will never happen again.
He later founded Task Force X, a secret government military division, working alongside the secret science division Cadmus to create advanced weapons. When Cadmus began to invest its resources into altruistic technology rather than weapons for the Return of Nemesis Omega, Lane made "the first hard call" in his life to shut down Cadmus and eliminate the scientists involved; although the Brain and Monsieur Mallah survived their attack, and went into hiding from the General.
Season 1[]
"Adventures of a Normal Man"[]
After Leslie Willis and her gang robbed Mt. Simonson Base, a storage warehouse for much of this weaponry, Lane assigned Agent Slade Wilson to track Leslie down, a task he succeeded in. General Lane and Amanda Waller are subsequently present when Slade tortures and interrogates Leslie about what she knows about Nemesis Omega, Zero Day, Task Force X and Superman.
"You Will Believe a Man Can Lie"[]
Following this, Lane would assign Slade to track down every piece of missing technology, kidnapping everyone who has obtained it. After Heat Wave escapes Superman and Lois Lane, the General's daughter, while they are questioning her about the kidnappings and technology, Slade is seen watching from afar and asks his superiors which target to pursue. The General deems that Superman can wait, and orders Slade to get their tech back.
Later, Lane, alongside Waller, appear through holograms when Slade asks for permission to engage in Superman and Heat Wave's battle at a construction site. Waller deems that Slade's suit is operating at maximum efficiency from the technology that has now been integrated into it, and that there will never be a better time to engage Superman; Lane agrees, and permits Slade to engage with backup. The General and Waller observe as Slade freezes Heat Wave and engages Superman alongside two OMAC robots. During the fight, Superman realizes that they are the ones behind the kidnappings and technology, also recognizing Lane as the man he saw in a vision while handling Heat Wave's tech.
Superman asks General Lane who he is: in response, he tells him that he is the one keeping the Earth safe, and orders one of the OMACs to beat Superman repeatedly. The fight continues onto a nearby highway, where Slade slices out the support beams, forcing Superman to stop fighting to save the people above. Waller orders Slade to shoot Superman down, but Lane overrules her, unwilling to endanger civilians. Waller responds that a few lives don't matter if the Earth is threatened by another Zero Day, only for the General to remind her who is in charge of their operation. Lane then orders Slade to retreat and promises to see Superman again, disappearing while Superman rescues the civilians.
"My Adventures with Mad Science"[]
The next day, Lane was later notified about the re-emergence of several OMAC robots near Cadmus' old facility; accidentally re-activated by Clark and Lois during their search for Jimmy Olsen in the area. The General and Task Force X head to the Cadmus facility after Clark, Lois, Jimmy, Brain and Mallah have departed from it, and inspects one of the destroyed OMACs. He reflects on his history with the facility and then turns to his captive, Dr. Anthony Ivo, telling him to give his opinion on the technology present. Ivo questions why he should do so, Lane responding that they both want the same thing; to destroy Superman and ensure he is forgotten. Ivo accepts this and eagerly asks the General when do they start.
"Zero Day"[]
The General and Waller use all the criminals they've captured - Livewire, Intergang, Ivo and Heat Wave - to take down Superman. They have a member of the Intergang, Mist, distract Superman, ruin his reputation and then trick him into finding the ship where the rest of Task Force X waits. They all gang up on him, and although Superman does good he is defeated by Ivo. The General asks him to not kill Superman and he refuses, causing Lane to activate his electric collar that knocks him unconscious.
The General has Superman tortured and imprisoned so he could tell him everything he knows. Alongside this, he also reveals his backstory to the man. However, once Superman starts crying and says he doesn't know anything, the General has a realization that he might not be the bad guy: specifically because, if he ages like normal humans, then he is far too young to be Nemesis Omega or otherwise connected to the attack. Once all the criminals break out of prison - with Ivo specifically endangering all of Metropolis - Waller and the General have an argument where the former reveals she's now in charge of Task Force X, the latter being deemed to incompetent for the job.
