I didn't need no gun. I did mine with my hands. I was right there, I was right on top of her. I was face to face. I wasn't even mad, really. She didn't even look surprised. Just a little stoned. After a few minutes, her face puffed out and it turned dark purple and she just stared at me. She couldn't move. She couldn't scream. I had total control over her. I had total control over her. It all felt so real. It felt so... real. She was dead, there, in front of me, and I felt so f***ing alive!
~ Samson recounting his murder to Feck.

Samson Tollet is the main antagonist in the 1986 crime drama film River's Edge.

He is portrayed by Daniel Roebuck, who also portrayed B.J. in The Walking Dead, Mark Bishop in L.A. Noire, and Michael Clark Thompson in Criminal Minds.

Biography[]

Samson Tollet, a.k.a. "John" is a high school student living with his senile aunt in a small town in Northern California. His mother is dead, and he has never met his father.

One day, John is hanging out with his girlfriend, Jamie, by a river, when he suddenly strangles her for no apparent reason; he later says that he was not even angry at her. Tim, the younger brother of John's friend Matt, is standing at the bridge on the river and hears John cry out with savage joy. When he sees Jamie's dead body, he drops a doll belonging to her into the river.

John goes to a convenience store to buy beer, but the clerk refuses to sell it to him because he has no I.D., Tim steals a couple of beers and puts them in John's car. Tim asks him if he knows where he can get some dope and the two drive to the home of Feck, a disturbed ex-biker and drug dealer, to buy marijuana.

John goes to school and sees Matt and their mutual friend Layne smoke with their friends Clarissa, Maggie, and Tony. Matt talks about wanting to run away to Portland, which Clarissa dismisses. John arrives and says that he killed Jamie. Clarissa and Maggie think he's joking and leave for class. He brings Layne and Matt to view her body; Matt is horrified, while Layne tries to cover up the crime.

The group all plan to go see Jamie's body that evening, which Clarissa assumes is a practical joke. An older acquaintance, Mike, agrees to drive them in his truck, and they each see Jamie's body for themselves. Mike, shocked and horrified walks off and Layne tries to stop him, but John intervenes. Later on that night, Layne goes back to the scene and pushes Jamie's body into the river. Later, while driving with John and drinking beer, they talk and John, not having a clue to reality, Layne tells him the importance of friendship. They drive by John's house and see police cars there. Layne panics, but John remains calm. They drive to Feck's house, Layne knocks on the door and John sees Feck dancing with Ellie, a sex doll that Feck has a romantic interest in.

John and Feck have a conversation about their respective murder victims. John says he killed Jamie by accident, while Feck tells him that he killed a woman once and it was no accident. Feck shows John his gun and John is impressed. John wants to go on a beer run, and the two stop at a convenience store and run into Matt and Clarissa. The clerk refuses to sell them beer being after 1am. John points the gun at the clerk and tells him he's turning back the time. Meanwhile, John and Feck have gone to the river's edge to drink beer. Feck discusses a murder he committed years prior of his own girlfriend, and John drunkenly begins to brag about killing Jamie, recounting his strangling her to death with relish. Feck sees that John has not remorse for what he did and at dawn, John falls asleep on the river bank, and Feck shoots him in the head. Layne calls Feck's house asking where John is, and Feck tells him he's gone to the river; in the middle of the phone call, police break down Feck's door.

Layne arrives at the river's edge and sees Matt, Clarissa, Tony, Maggie, and Mike there. Layne is pissed off at Mike, thinking he ratted out John and is about to beat him up and Matt stops him. Matt tries to convince Layne to turn John in and reveals to Layne that he did. Layne is upset and goes off to look for John. Layne finds John's body, and the police arrive and escort the teenagers away as medical examiners remove John's body. In the hospital, Feck admits to killing John "because there was no hope for him" and confesses to murdering his girlfriend years before.

Trivia[]

  • John is loosely based on Anthony Jacques Broussard, a 16-year-old high school student who raped and murdered his girlfriend, Marcee Renee Conrad, on November 3, 1981.
