Sander Cohen is a major antagonist in the science fiction video game BioShock and its prequel novel BioShock: Rapture and a supporting character in Burial at Sea - Episode 1, the story-driven DLC of BioShock Infinite.
An extravagant artist, Cohen was personally invited to Rapture by Andrew Ryan himself, and remained one of Ryan's most loyal followers during the civil war. Upon the fall of Rapture, Sander became a psychotic sadist who started killing people for his art.
He was voiced by T. Ryder Smith.
Biography[]
Background[]
Sander Cohen was born around the 1930s as a Jewish-American citizen, and was either born in or moved to New York where he became an artist. Sander became a well known in his field and was celebrated, but he found himself mostly pleasing the public instead of following his passions. However, Cohen's talent was questioned by those who doubted his abilities, and the author Lee Wilson Seward considered him a fraud. While in New York, he became friends with the businessman Andrew Ryan, who admired his art and invited him to Rapture.
Rapture[]
Accepting Ryan's invention, Cohen went to Rapture where he became the head of the artistic community, tackling other subjects such as poetry, playwriting and music. He also became the owner of Fort Frolic, a place where citizens could unwind by drinking or shopping, and owned other places such as a night club called "Cohen's" and several art galleries. In Rapture, Sander remained one of Ryan's most loyal supporter, and defended his friend anytime he was criticized by others. His closeness to Ryan caught the attention one of Sander's enemies Anna Culpepper, whom was alter killed by security chief Sullivan on Ryan's orders. Following Culpepper's death, Sander didn't have any competition in the art world, and remained on top in the art community.
When Frank Fontaine came to Rapture, he would cause the closing of his Little Sister's orphanage, leaving them on the streets. Cohen saw an opportunity to take the orphans off the streets and traffic them to individuals who were willing to pay the right price. Many of the orphans were bought by Ryan's company to be turned into Little Sisters, young girls tasked with obtaining ADAM. Around this time, Cohen came upon inspired artists who became his disciples, with one of them being Elizabeth, who secretly getting information on his child trafficking. It's heavily implied by the disciples in BioShock that their relationship with Cohen was sexual, as the artist himself comments on the subject. At some point, the disciples either betrayed Cohen or Sander became displeased with them.
During the civil war, Cohen became a member of the Rapture Central Council, where Ryan issued that he could control Fontaine's business. The war would result in the fall of Rapture, and Cohen went insane due to taking ADAM and feeling unappreciated by the citizens. Around this point, Cohen started to regret ever accepting Ryan's invention, presumably as a result of everyone focusing on the civil war and Fort Frolic being forced to close. He would manage to survive the city's fall, however, and remained in Fort Frolic alongside his disciples, who grew to resent their former idol sine they were locked in the fort.
BioShock[]
“ | Cohen's an artist, says some. He's a Section Eight, says I. I've seen all kinds of cutthroats, freaks, and hard cases in my life, but Cohen, he's a real lunatic, a dyed-in-the-wool psychopath... | „ |
~ Atlas describing Cohen as an psychopath to Jack. |
When Jack arrives in Fort Frolic to reach Hephaestus, Cohen becomes aware of his presence and cuts off Ryan and Atlas from contacting him. He also submerges the bathysphere to Hephaestus, thus trapping Jack in the fort since he can use him for his own purposes. Ordering him to the hall, Cohen kills Kyle Fitzpatrick and tasks Jack with taking photos of his former disciples' corpses in exchange for safe passage to Hephaestus. After Jack takes the third photo, Sander accuses him of being a doubter due to hid delusions, sending several splicers to kill him. However, he returns to senses once the splicers are dealt with, and tells Jack to continue.
Once placing the final photo, Cohen reveals himself to congratulate Jack for his work, and gives him a reward and lets him leave. However, the player has the option to kill Cohen, leaving his fate up to the player.
Fate[]
Jack can attack Cohen, who will turn into a houdini splicer, but is dispatched by the former. If the player chooses not to kill Cohen at Fort Frolic, then Jack will encounter him later in his apartment at Mercury Suites. At there, Cohen welcomes him into his home. As Jack enters the apartment he sees two Splicers dancing. If the player disrupts the dancers and kills them, Cohen will then descend from his room upstairs and attack Jack. However, if the player leaves the dancers alone then it is entirely possible for Cohen to survive the events of BioShock.
BioShock 2[]
Sander doesn't make a physical appearance in BioShock 2, instead being mentioned by several splicers on occasion.
Burial at Sea[]
Sander appears in the first episode of Burial at Sea, as Elizabeth and Booker DeWitt infiltrate his night club to get any information on Sally. Cohen reveals to the pair that he knows Sally's location, but will only give them information if they dance for him. Despite the two agreeing to his demands, Cohen electrocutes them when they start to displease him. He then had Booker and Elizabeth to a prison department store, as this was Sally last known whereabouts.
