Personality[]
As a child Soundman set himself apart from the ways of his tribe never cooperating with others once he decided to do something his own way. While at odds with his tribe Sandman was still loyal to them and sought more productive ways to go about reclaiming their land like reading and understanding modern running techniques from Americans, coming to the belief that a large sum of money would be the best way to gain the rights to their ancestors land.
When joining the Steel Ball Run race Sandman was largely respectful toward the Americans he met aside from an announcer that nearly denied him entry into the race. In the early stages, Sandman was an honorable contestant giving a rival racer named Pocoloco advice that saved his life in the first stage and got on relatively friendly terms with Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli. However as the race goes on Sandman abandons all his honorable characteristics and begins to take drastic measures to win the prize money as fast and easy as possible. First he met with President Funny Valentine and struck a deal with him that if he would retrieve the Holy Saint Corpse parts from his enemies (Johnny and Gyro) he would be given the rights to his land to which he accepted. Next he demonstrated his Stand ability; "In a Silent Way" to Diego Brando having one of his creatures violently attack his wrist (not knowing he was wearing a watch.
During the 5th Stage of the race Sandman attempted to retrieve the corpse parts from Johnny and Gyro through lethal violence, turning one of the racers into a human land mind and later stabbing another Racer for witnessing his crimes. After cornering Johnny Sandman shows no mercy in attempting to kill him and reveals a vindictive side to him unseen, blaming his people (Americans) for labelling him as "Sandman" and not his birth name "Soundman". He is also revealed to be arrogant as he refused Johnny's mercy to stand down and attempted to strike him with 'In a Silent Way' before he is fatally shot, his last thoughts being of his hope his sister can live happily.
Biography[]
Soundman was born sometime in 1872, the youngest child of a Native American tribe living in Arizona mountains. According to his older sister and fellow tribe members Soundman often separated himself from them and their teachings opting to learn about American history and religion to better understand the culture of Americans and find a more productive way to reclaim their land. At around the time he was 18 he would begin to be called "Sandman" by his sister and tribe members, and at one point spotted Gyro training in the mountains and claimed the books he left behind for his own.
On September 25, 1890 Sandman is chased by his tribe after being discovered reading "white man books" in his tent and is sentenced to execution narrowly escaping by way of his Stand ability. When he is found by his sister he is reprimanded and told to apologize to the chief but he refuses explaining his intentions to reclaim their ancestors land by competing in the Steel Ball Run race. His sister gives him an emerald keepsake to pay for the admission wishing him luck, after arriving in San Diego he sees the man (Gyro Zeppeli) again and is directed to the race admission clerk. Before he was nearly about to be turned down by a clerk, he uses his Stand ability to reveal his emerald allowing him admission into the race.
During the first stage Sandman verbally saves Pocoloco from falling a cliff and manages to win first place in the first 1st stage after Gyro inadvertently made him tumble earlier, though he held no grudge. For the next three stages in the race, Sandman does well but abandons racing fairly and collaborates with Valentine and his men striking a deal to retrieve the Holy Saint Corpse and as a result he would be given the rights to his land. Sometime during the 4th stage. As his last act of good will he directs Gyro and Johnny to head North in their search for Diego Brando. In Kansas city President Valentine and his men order Sandman to watch over Diego in case they decide to kill him but strike a deal that he work with him instead in order to steal the corpse parts from Johnny and Gyro.
In the 5th stage Sandman turns a racer into a human land mind with 'In a Silent Way' and sends him after Johnny and Gyro, eventually his stand ability mortally injures Gyro and Sandman uses the opportunity to attack another racer before revealing his motives to Johnny Joestar and revealing his birth name as "Soundman" as they continue to fight Johnny gains the upper hand and mortally wounds Sandman, before he succumbs to his injuries he thinks of his older sister one last time.

In a Silent Way's abilities all relate around the general concept of sound. Its first ability is to "store" sounds within people or objects by doing the action that may create that sound, which is able to replicate its effects (for example, a cutting sound may slash a target, or a burning sound may set a target ablaze) if a target touches the object affected. In a Silent Way also is able to construct living sound effects that also mimic whatever could have caused that sound (For example, Sandman using a "woosh" caused by slashing his knife in thin air to generate a gust of wind to block projectiles and be blasted into the air) and is able to breathe life into sound effects to generate living homunculi. As for the latter case, the homunculi can be given the ability to move or fly, choose what gets under the effect of the sound effect, choose if their sound can go through objects or bounce off them, have certain things be able to enhance the sound's transmission (although the opposite is also true in this case, as some things may weaken the sound's transmission) and use constructive interference when several homunculi attack together to increase their damage. The homunculi, however, are not free from being turned to Diego's will if affected by Scary Monsters, and as stated, may be weakened if their only option is transmitting sound through something that doesn't transfer it well. With a fighting style best geared to set traps and minions to do its bidding, In a Silent Way is best used as a Stand who attacks from a distance.
Sandman himself is also extremely skilled in running and gymnastics, being able to out speed and outtravel even horses. This is possible because Sandman is able to "recycle" the energy he gets from running by only touching his heel to the ground briefly, causing him to be able to perform impressive feats of speed, agility, and endurance.

Trivia[]
- While his exact namesake is never confirmed, Sandman's name may coms from two different sources: either the America song of the same name, or the Metallica song "Enter Sandman".
- Meanwhile, Sandman's Stand, "In a Silent Way", is named after a Miles Davis album with the same name.
- While Soundman (サウンドマン, Saundoman) claims that White people mistakenly and incorrectly misread his name as Sandman (サンドマン(砂男), Sandoman) his tribe members and sister refer to him as the latter multiple times in the story, it is unclear why he blamed his name being misread on Americans while his tribe did the same.
