The Sandman is the main antagonist of the late Paul Berry's 1991 stop-motion Adult animated short film, The Sandman. He is a demonic, bird-like entity who resides on the moon in his crystal nest with his offspring. Every so often, he'd visit Earth to pluck the eyes of children so he could feed them to his hatchlings.
Personality[]
The Sandman is nothing like how he is made to be in general stories, regarding a sweet man who fills children's minds with peaceful dreams as they sleep. Rather, he is a sadistic, demonic, and monstrous figure. He is shown to be motivated by sadism as much as he is in feeding his children. This is most evident when he makes noise to alert his victims of their upcoming deaths as he comes into their rooms. He was also not above breaking his own rules. While he is a being who throws sand into the eyes of children who do not go to sleep, he makes the kid wake up so he can do so and take his eyes. His only redeeming quality is that he seems to care for his three children.
Biography[]
The short revolves around a young boy who is sent upstairs to bed by his mother, only to be scared by the fear of being watched. As he is about to go to bed, the Sandman's face appears to him outside the window in the crescent moon. The Sandman soon arrives at the bottom of the stairs, ready to take the boy as his next victim. He begins making noises to frighten the child as he walks up the stairs. He looks in each of the rooms for the boy, but the child, who is alarmed by the noise, knocks over his oil lamp, giving his location away to the fiendish demon. The boy hides under the covers, but before the Sandman can enter, the boy's mother arrives in the room to pick up the broken lamp and tuck her child into the bed.
The boy, now calm and believing everything is okay, falls asleep, however, the Sandman comes into his room. He attempts to take the child as the newest victim but realizes he must wake the child up in order to take out his eyes. He begins making noise and dancing around the child's bed. When the boy finally wakes up, the Sandman throws sand into his eyes, causing them to fall out so he may take them. The demon flies back to the moon to feed to eyes to his three babies. Towards the end credits of the film, the child walks amongst hundreds of other children who were victims of the Sandman.

Trivia[]
- This particular version of the Sandman is based on his characterization in E.T.A Hoffman's The Sandman-where he is presented as a demonic being who puts sand in the eyes of children who refuse to fall asleep, causing their eyes to fall out so he can bring them to feed his children in a crystal nest on the moon.
