~ Betelgeuse about the Sandworms. |
Sandworms are minor antagonists in the Beetlejuice franchise. They are giant snake-like monsters that live on Titan, a dusty moon for Saturn.
Appearance[]
In the live-action films, the Sandworms have white heads with yellow eyes, striped tongue, sharp teeth, and blue-green lips inside striped grayish-black and white body skins with red eyes and sharp teeth. They have an internal head that extrudes from the outer face when they are about to attack, and both mouths are filled with fangs. Their nature is not known.
In the animated series, they have striped lavender and purple body skins with four yellow eyes, sharp yellow teeth, and green lips.
Biography[]
Beetlejuice[]
When Adam and Barbara Maitland died, they went back into their house and Adam checks to walk back out the door, but then the outside begins to change into a dark sandy night. Adam heard a strange roaring noise and saw a coil sticking out of the sand, but Barbara grabs Adam back into the door.
Barbara walks out of the door outside and falls down to Saturn. She was lost and Adam went out to Saturn to look for her. When they found each other, the growling noise appears from far away crawling in the sand and the sandworm pops out to eat them, but Barbara hits the sandworm and it shakes it's head and then it's about to eat them again, but Adam and Barbara went back into the door.
In a deleted scene when the Deetzes enter the attic to find the Maitlands, Adam and Barbara are hanging outside the window with the Sandworm snapping at them from below.
Much later in the film, Betelgeuse sends Barbara back into Titan. She rides the sandworm back into the house and it eats Betelgeuse up. Barbara jumps off and the sandworm crashes through the floor (and Beetlejuice along with it).

Personality[]
While sandworms don't speak, there is an interesting cartoonish reaction when one is hit. It seems as through they have the personality of a dog. They also share a trait with bulls, as Beetlejuice is able to manipulate one into killing his ex-wife Delores with a red cape.
History[]
Sandworms live in the vast sand dunes of the fictional version of Saturn seen in the film (exactly why wandering ghosts are teleported to Saturn is not explained). They are capable of eating ghosts, which will result in the spirit suffering a second death.

Trivia[]
- There are real sandworms, but they are nothing like the ones in the live action film or TV series.
- They have four eyes on their heads in the TV series, but in the live-action film, they have two eyes on their head instead of four.
- The Sandworms shared the same white and black striped theme as Betelgeuse which brings in some irony when one actually eats him.
