During his early years, Sanford Smithers served as a general for the Confederate States of America, gaining infamy when he ordered the massacre of a number of black prisoners of war at Baton Rouge because he didn't want to take care of them. At some point during this time, he married a woman named Betsy and fathered his son, Chester Charles Smithers, who became a bounty hunter.
Two years after his son went missing, Sanford went to find his body. On the way, he stopped at Minnie's Haberdashery. While there, he played chess with Sweet Dave while siting in front of the fire place. However, as this was happening, a gang led by Jody Domergue entered the Haberdashery and killed Minnie and everyone else there except for Sanford, who was told to keep his mouth shut. Sanford willingly agreed to cooperate.
Sanford attempted to shoot Major Marquis Warren after he found out that Marquis raped and murdered Charlie, but before he could, Marquis fatally shot him in the chest, having deliberately provoked Sanford so he could kill him. Chris Mannix ended up taking his jacket when his body was taken outside.

Sanford is an old man with white hair and facial hair he wears a confederate jacket and light grey pants.
Personality[]
Sanford is a grade A bigoted xenophobe with utter contempt for African-Americans but he deeply cares about his son and finding his body and is utterly horrified to hear about his son's death. With all that said he does a least some what try to get along with Major Marquis Warren before he tells him about what he did to his son. Even for a racist, he still had some form of respect for the Major due to the fact that they were soldiers.
