Sannukikano is a minor antagonist in the Otherside Picnic series. She serves as the titular main antagonist of Volume 3, Chapter 10 (Sannuki-san and Karateka-san) in the light novel and in Episode 9 of the anime.
Much like most Entities of the series, Sannukikano is based on the Japanese horror story of the same name. Unique to the other Otherside Entities in the series, Sannukikano mostly appeared in the human world rather than in the titular setting. Unlike her original counterpart, however, this particular incarnation of her is a cruel, cold-hearted misanthrope, who is directly responsible for the misfortunes that Natsumi Ichikawa and her family had fallen to.
Like the original story, Sannukikano is a mysterious entity who has a bizarre fascination with teeth, whose purpose is to give tooth to anyone who gave one of them to the monkey-like creature, which later turned out to be her other form.
She is voiced by Akiko Takeguchi in Japanese and by Casey Casper in English.
Appearance[]
Sannukikano presented herself as an elderly woman dressed in a kimono who spoke inaudibly or with little to no emotion. Her true form had five linked mummies of dead monkeys at its centre, and innumerable human teeth were swirling all around. In the anime, after Sorawo uses her eye to reveal her true form, she has long hair and is completely nude.
Personality[]
Sannukikano is a ghost who speaks and expresses in a rather cold, emotionless tone. However, despite her emotionless personality, Sannukikano is also known to be cruel and intolerant, as she was responsible for causing the Ichikawa family to fall into disarray, as they suffered various misfortunes and strange incidents, sometime after Natsumi threw the set of teeth within her family yard, as well as her having no qualms of pulling out Akari and Natsumi's teeth, as revenge for the latter's act of discarding them.
Background[]
Otherside Picnic[]
Akari asked Sorawo for assistance once more regarding a strange situation that her friend Natsumi was going through. She had mentioned seeing a monkey in their yard to Akari. The look on the monkey was human-like. She received human teeth from it, and it instructed her to display the teeth to Sannukikano when she arrived. However, Natsumi tossed the teeth away, and her family started getting into various incidents, as such the case when her mother got involved in a hit-and-run accident and with her father breaking his ribs after an accident from his line of work, leading to both of them being hospitalised.
Lore[]
The Sannukikano occurrences initially surfaced on 16th of January 2009 in the thread "Fukakai na Taiken, Nazo no Hanashi enigma Part 49" (Incomprehensible Experiences, Mysterious Stories ~enigma~ Part 49) post 665.
The original poster of the story claimed that it encountered a monkey-like creature who proceeded to talk via telepathy, as it utters: "Sannukikano will be coming, so show her this. If you say you took it yourself, she will give you one, too. Bury it in the yard afterward." According to the poster, the creature left behind a tooth that is most likely a human molar. The story kept going in the same direction two days later. The poster depicted the elderly woman Sannukikano holding the tooth that the monkey-like creature had given her. After giving the poster a new tooth, Sannukikano departed. They later buried the teeth in their yard after posting photos of them online.
Trivia[]
- Owing to the theme of the series, Sannukikano is based on the internet horror story of the same name.
