Antonio López de Santa Anna, better known as Santa Anna, is one of the three main antagonists (alongside Red Stick and Amos Thorpe) of Disney's 1955 live-action film, Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier. He is a ruthless Mexican general who plans to crush the Texan Revolution and reclaim Texas.
Biography
When Davy Crockett and George Russel learn that Santa Anna is trying to reclaim Texas, they set out to help Texas gain independence with the help of a riverboat gambler named Thimberlig and a Comanche tribesman named Busted Luck.
Along the way, Davy and his friends come across a travelling Mexican family and ask where San Antonio de Mexar is, to which they reply that Santa Anna has taken over the town and that the Texan rebels led by Colonel James Bowie are fighting at the Alamo. Ignoring their warnings that it's too dangerous, Davy and his friends decide to head to the Alamo to fight against Santa Anna. However, they are suddenly spotted by Santa Anna and his troops and they give chase. The four men manage to reach the Alamo and take cover, while the Texan rebels fight off the Mexican soldiers.
After their failure to kill Davy and his friends, Santa Anna brings more than two thousand troops to surround the fort and sends a messenger to deliver a letter to the rebels ordering them to either surrender in peace or die. The rebels refuse to surrender and they respond to Santa Anna's message by continuing to fight.
Later, the rebels realize that they are almost out of amunition and George decides to head to Goliad to get help. Two days later, George returns to the Alamo and informs the rebels that he couldn't get any help. The Mexican army later assembles for an invasion of the Alamo, but Colonel Travis warns the defenders and they manage to fight off the soldiers.
The following morning, Santa Anna arrives with more soldiers and the rebels try to fend the troops off, to no avail. The Mexican soldiers manage to break into the Alamo and many of the rebels, including Busted Luck, Thimberlig, Travis and Bowie are killed. George is deeply wounded in the battle, leaving Davy the sole defender of the Alamo. Davy then swings his rifle at the oncoming hordes of Mexican soldiers and is presumably killed in the battle.
However, despite Santa Anna's victory of successfully invading the Alamo, his efforts to reclaim Texas have failed and the state has finally become an independent state a month later.
Trivia
- Despite being the main antagonist of "The Alamo" segment, Santa Anna only makes two appearances: firstly when he and his troops spot Davy and his friends heading for the Alamo, and the second one featuring him invading the Alamo and ordering his troops to kill Colonel Bowie.
- In real-life, it is stated that Davy Crockett may have survived the Battle of the Alamo and was executed by Santa Anna, while other accounts suggest that he was probably killed in battle.
- It is revealed by Fess Parker that he wrote a script for a third Davy Crockett movie, where it is revealed that Davy, George and a few other defenders have survived the battle and were being held prisoner by Santa Anna. After 25 years, Davy and George escape Santa Anna's prison and head to New Orleans on a slave ship. Davy and George eventually return to Texas, thinking that the Battle of the Alamo is still taking place. However, they realize that the battle was long over and that it was the 25th anniversary of the final day of the battle.
