~ Sonny to Carogero |
Santino "Sonny" LoSpecchio is the main protagonist of the iconic film A Bronx Tale. Sonny is an Italian-American mobster and the boss of his Gang whom has a protective character and similar to that of a hero.
He is portrayed by Chazz Palminteri, who played Mr. King in Down to Earth, Smokey in Stuart Little, Buster in Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp's Adventure and Mr. Walken in Little Man.
Biography[]
Born in The Bronx, New York City in 1913 to a family of Italian immigrants. He turned to crime as a boy in order to provide for himself, and he soon became a respected neighborhood mob boss. After killing a man in the middle of the street to save the life of an associate of his, a child named Calogero "C" Anello, who had seen the murder, was interrogated by detectives who asked him to point to the executioner, however the child did not inform and denied convoying Sonny and his gang.
Sonny took Calogero under his wing, trying to be a mentor or other father figure to the child. After playing a game of dice, Calogero wins hundreds of dollars together with Sonny and after being discovered by his mother and father Lorenzo, the two go to give the money back and Lorenzo argues with Sonny.
Sonny, now grown and powerful, had the entire neighborhood under his dominion and probably worked together with other Italian-American mafiosi. After a fight with some bikers, Sonny catches Calogero and his gang who try to buy a gun and scolds them.
After finding out that Calogero was in love Sonny gives them his car but discovers that the car had a bomb, Sonny went to Carogero thinking it was his fault, he calls Calogero a liar and says that his girlfriend was just an excuse, however, after seeing it, Sonny changes his mind again.
After saving Calogero from death at the hands of a gang in the black neighborhood who killed his gang, Calogero runs all the way over to the bar to thank Sonny, but before he can thank him, Sonny was shot in the head and killed by the son of the man he killed all those years ago.
Personality[]
Sonny is a strong, happy but somewhat nihilistic person. He knows that most people are close to him because they are afraid of him, not because they love him, however he is extremely protective of those who show him real affection, like Calogero. He has taken Carogero under his wing ever since he discovered his real affection towards him, even considering himself a father to the boy, at times he has tried to manipulate Carogen into thinking that he owes nothing to his real father or that the path is a good way, but he has always been close to him since childhood like a real father. Sonny commands respect from everyone and doesn't let anyone push him around He himself confirms that he doesn't trust anyone, the only one he will trust later will be Calogero.
Trivia[]
The film is inspired by the one-man play of the same name written by Palminteri himself. Sonny is inspired by a real mobster Palminteri saw kill a man in front of him when Palminteri was Calogero’s age. Calogero, in turn, is inspired by Palminteri when he was a boy.
