| ~ Saphir's dying words (Viz dub) |
Saphir is the younger brother of Prince Diamond, and a commander in the Black Moon Clan.
He was voiced by Tsutomu Kashiwakura in original series and Tsubasa Yonaga in Sailor Moon Crystal in Japanese and Lyon Smith in DiC dub and Greg Feldman in Viz dub in English.
History[]
Loyal to Prince Demand, and one of the founding members of the Black Moon clan, Saphir is in charge of creating the Droids and bringing them to life with the energies of the Malefic Black Crystal generated from the reactor. Out of the Black Moon members, Saphir was the only member not to directly use a fragment of the Black Crystal. When Demand brought Usagi to the moon, Saphir admitted his distain towards Neo Queen Serenity and attempted to kill Usagi with his Droids Veneti and Aquatici while telling her that the Legendary Silver Crystal causes nothing but misery. But Usagi managed to transform with her future self's help as she and her friends escape the collapsing Black Moon castle.
Saphir and Demand were brought to Wiseman by his new agent Black Lady, the brothers learning of Rubeus death before Saphir was under Wise Man's mind control spell and equipped with Black Crystal earrings to aid Black Lady. But Demand, immune to the effects of Wise Man's magic, was forced to kill Saphir.

Their paths cross during the Black Moon arc, where Saphir, as a member of the Black Moon Clan, is involved in the conflict against the Sailor Guardians. Sailor Mercury, known for her intelligence and strategic thinking, confronts the Black Moon Clan alongside her fellow Guardians. While they do not share significant screen time or personal exchanges, both characters play pivotal roles in their respective factions' efforts during this arc.
90s Anime Dub[]
In the 1990s English dub of Sailor Moon, Saphir—renamed Sapphire—is portrayed as the younger brother of Prince Demande (Prince Diamond) and a key member of the Black Moon Clan, known as the Negamoon Family in the dub. Voiced by Lyon Smith, Sapphire is depicted as a cautious and rational figure, often expressing skepticism toward Wiseman's manipulative influence over his brother. Unlike other clan members, he refrains from wearing the Black Crystal earrings he helped develop, symbolizing his reluctance to fully embrace the clan's darker ambitions. His role primarily involves providing technological support, such as supplying Emerald (Esmeraude) with dark wedges to amplify the clan's power. Sapphire's growing distrust of Wiseman and concern for his brother's well-being highlight his internal conflict and desire to prevent further destruction.
Sapphire gave Emerald crystal objects called Dark Wedges to help her take over Tokyo, but all her plans were foiled.
Sapphire suspected Wiseman of manipulating them, especially after Wiseman brought about the death of Emerald. Soon, his suspicions were confirmed and he stole a chip Wiseman was using to power the dark crystal, and then attempted to warn Diamond, but was attacked and nearly killed by Wiseman. The Negamoon Sisters found him and took him to their house to recover from his injuries. Sapphire tried to tell Diamond about Wiseman's evil plan, with the Sailor Scouts attempting to stop Wicked Lady from hurting him, but Wiseman shot him with two energy blasts, the second succeeding in killing him. When the bandages on his head fell off, the dark crescent moon on his forehead vanished.
Sapphire has never been seen using any attacks in the anime.
Sapphire's character arc takes a tragic turn when he uncovers Wiseman's true intentions. After overhearing Wiseman's plan to eliminate both him and Demande, Sapphire attempts to thwart these plans by stealing a control chip from the dark crystal's reactor. Although he manages to escape to Earth, he is severely injured in the process. Determined to warn his brother, Sapphire confronts Demande but is fatally attacked by Wiseman before he can fully reveal the truth. His death is marked by the disappearance of the Black Moon symbol from his forehead, signifying his redemption and departure from the clan's malevolent path.
Sapphire's portrayal in the 90s dub adds depth to his character, emphasizing his moral struggle and capacity for love. His relationship with Prizma(Petz) provides a poignant subplot, contrasting the overarching themes of manipulation and power within the Negamoon Family. Despite his limited screen time, Sapphire's journey from a loyal clan member to a tragic hero underscores the complexities of allegiance and the potential for redemption,
Sailor Moon Crystal:[]
In Sailor Moon Crystal, Saphir (蒼のサフィール, Ao no Safīru) is portrayed as the younger brother of Prince Demande and a member of the Black Moon Clan. Saphir is fascinated by Droids, valuing their unwavering loyalty and predictability, unlike the unpredictable nature of his brother. He is also credited with inventing the Black Crystal earrings, though he does not wear them until an upgraded version is forced upon him, because the deadly Wiseman unfairly mind-controlled Saphir to do Wiseman's bidding and attempted to mind control Saphir's brother, Prince Demande. Wiseman, of course, failed, since Demande has a special power-the Evil Sight-preventing Wiseman from mind-controlling him.
Saphir's tragic end comes when Wiseman, having fully revealed his true nature as Death Phantom, uses his dark powers to control Saphir and his brother. Under Wiseman's influence, Saphir is forced to attack his own brother, leading to a heartbreaking confrontation.
