Sarugami is the monkey-themed Minor Youkai who served the Youkai Army Corps, working under Gashadokuro and a minor antagonist in Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, appearing as the titular main antagonist of the 21st episode.
He is played and voiced by the late Taisuke Imai.
Biography[]
Past[]
Sarugami first came to be when humanity's negative emotions physically manifested and formed thier own group under the leadership of the most powerful of thier kind; Daimaou. One thousand years ago, Sarugami was among the army of Yokai who attacked Ninjaman whilst he defended a village. Sarugami was evidently able to escape alive but Ninjaman was banished by the Three God Generals as he slaughtered his entire village after mistaking them for Yokai.
Sarugami was ultimately among the Yokai who managed to avoid being sealed behind the Seal Door by the Ancient Kakurangers but was reduced to a human form when the Yo Power was sealed with Daimaou.
Kakuranger[]
By 1994, Sarugami has evolved into a more human-like form and even opened his own dojo after the Yo Power is released by Kappa.
After regaining his Yo Power, Sarugami and one his Dorodoros pose as a father and his daughter Hanako. Knowing of the Kakurangers and thier opposition to the Youkai, Sarugami decides to learn thier techniques and use them to kill the Kakurangers. He is first seen training the Dorodoro in swordsmanship when three children (in actuality other Dorodoros under his command) appear and mock them for playing a boring game which leads to Hanako breaking down only for Saizou to appear and humiliate them into fleeing. Inviting Saizou inside, he invents a story about opening his dojo but no-one coming which led to his wife (another disguised Dorodoro) to fall ill. Sarugami begs for Saizou's help who agrees to help but his and the other Kakurangers' attempt to recruit students fails until they display thier own techniques which include thier signature slash attacks and the Kakuranger Ball when they are asked to perform football. Knowing of the Kakurangers' opposition to the Youkai, Sarugami decides to use thier techniques to kill the Kakurangers so ambushes them later in his true form and some Dorodoros. Using thier superior agility and thier knowledge of the Kakurangers' techniques, they easily overwhelm and defeat the Kakurangers. Even when the attempt the Kakuranger Ball, a Dorodoro takes it and they perform it on the Kakurangers instead before leaving to meet with Gashadokuro. Impressed with the Yokai's performance, Junior gives one of his rare compliments which leads to Sarugami bragging over his achievements.
The next morning, the Kakurangers pretend to be injured and ask Sarugami to make them a stronger version of the Kakuranger Ball which he accepts as he can use it against them. In the quarry, they trick him into believing thier new technique works so he and the Dorodoros reveal themselves before luring them into battle. The Kakurangers once again use the Kakuranger Ball and the Yokai take it but the technique backfires and defeats Sarugami as well as kills the Dorodoros since Jiraya saw thier meeting with Junior the night before and they devised the technique to defeat them instead. Enraged, Sarugami enlarges himself so the Kakurangers summon the Beast General Fighters but even they are overwhelmed until they defeat him with the combined Saruder Claw and Logan Kick attacks. They then kill Sarugami with the Fighter Crash, substituting Battle Logan for Battle Saruder.
Sarugami is recalled by the Announcer whilst recapping the Kakurangers' war against the Yokai during his feature on the Kakurangers. He is recalled both as a flashback to Ninjaman's early war against the Yokai and in a list of Yokai previously fought by the Kakurangers.
Sarigami is seen, along with all the other defeated Yokai, dancing behind the Seal Door after Daimaou is finally sealed away by the Kakurangers. Reeling that they are now powerless in captivity, the Yokai all vow that they will one day be reborn and regain their power, cursing humanity.
Personality[]
Sarugami acted like a serious but tragic swordsman who was always serious and loved his daughter dearly. In actuality, he was a manipulative trickster Youkai loyal only to Junior who wanted to kill the Kakurangers.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Strength: Sarugami was able to send Jiraya flying with a punch to the face and kicked with enough force to unleash a devastating Kakure Shoot.
- Durability: Sarugami survived the more powerful Kakure Shoot without a scratch.
- Longevity: Sarugami survived for at least six thousand years with no side effects.
- Human Form: Sarugami was able to assume the human form of a middle aged man by fading in and out of existence.
- Technique Copying: Sarugami was able to quickly learn the Kakurangers' moves by watching them be performed and figure out how to use them himself. These adapted techniques were referred to as his "Sarugami Style."
- Technique Defeating: After learning one of the Kakurangers' moves, Sarugami could also easily defeat it.
- Agility: Sarugami and his Dorodoros were able to easily jump around and attack the Kakurangers multiple times from different angles.
- Yokai Lightning Cloud Summoning: Sarugami was able to summon the Yokai Lightning Cloud to enlarge himself with its Yo Power.
- Hand to Hand Combat: Sarugami easily defeated all five Beast General Fighters with his bare hands.
Arsenal[]
- Katana: Sarugami wielded a large silver katana in battle.
- Sarugami Style: Square Cut; Sarugami copied Saizou's signature attack which consisted of an energized quad slash in the formation of a square.
- Kakuranger Ball: Sarugami had one of the Dorodoros take the Kakuranger ball and they performed the Kakure Shoot against the Kakurangers.
- Shuriken: Sarugami used a shuriken to try and kill a spying Jiraya but it missed.
- Fists: As a giant, Sarugami used only his bare hands but easily defeated the Beast General Fighters.
