~ The Sarumarine engages Fox McCloud. |
The Sarumarine Captain is an antagonist from the Star Fox series, making his only appearance in Star Fox 64. He is a monstrous bioweapon that lurks in the oceans of Zoness, serving as the boss of the stage Invasion Aftermath, which takes place on the planet.
Description[]
The Sarumarine Captain is an aberrant creature that has an arm that he calls a "crane" and an eyestalk coming from the top with two eyes. He has a second arm equipped with a spiked flail beneath this eyestalk and two horns called "exhaust pipes." He also has cannons on the sides to shoot bombs.
The Sarumarine Captain talks like a pirate. Whenever he speaks, he has a vocal range similar to Luigi from Super Mario Bros, albeit more guttural.
History[]
When Emperor Andross brought Zoness under his control during his takeover of the Lylat System, the Sarumarine was modified by the Venomian troops to serve the mad ape, polluting Zoness as a result and mutating the native wildlife into hideous monsters. Fox McCloud and his teammates snuck through Zoness to launch a raid, but the Sarumarine intercepted their path. He waited at the end and then engaged in combat with the team, only to be defeated resulting in the monstrous guardian's demise.
Boss Battle[]
In combat, the Sarumarine has to be defeated via Nova Bombs, since he can resist normal laser fire, regardless the strength. Fox can get these Nova Bombs from black explosive pods fired from the creature's side cannons.
Phase 1[]
At the start of the fight, the Sarumarine makes one flail attack. Afterwards, he launches straight bombs from the side cannons, twisting side to side yet generally facing Fox's direction. If Fox hits one of the side cannons with his Nova Bombs without first taking out the exhaust pipes, the Sarumarine Captain will retreat below the surface to regenerate that side cannon, rendering him immune to attack. He can still be shot in the eyes, however. During this time, the Sarumarine's only moves involve the mace attack and launching explosive pods that leave flame trails. After around 15 to 30 seconds, the Sarumarine will resurface and resume firing bombs until he loses a side cannon again. If Fox destroys his eyestalk while she is regenerating a lost side cannon, the boss will launch the flail wildly while submerged and unable to precisely track Fox's location.
To progress to the next phase, Fox has to destroy the exhaust pipes at the top of the beast's body; afterwards, he will no longer submerge herself when he loses one of his side cannons.
Phase 2[]
The Sarumarine will still launch explosive pods, swaying left and right, but this time when he loses a side cannon, he will turn around and use his "crane" to retrieve and reattach it. Fox has to amputate this arm with three or four Nova Bombs, but the Sarumarine will still attack by shooting explosive pods. After amputating the arm, Fox can destroy the other side cannon without having to worry about him trying to get the side cannons back.
Phase 3[]
Upon losing her other side cannon, the Sarumarine becomes unstable will launch fireballs in streams at the Arwing. From this point, he can be harmed by regular laser fire. When defeated, the Sarumarine burns to death and collapses into the water.
Trivia[]
- The Sarumarine is called an "illegally modified research vessel" in Star Fox 64 3D, even though the official site claims that it is a bioweapon.
- The Sarumarine is the only boss that cannot be defeated without using a Nova Bomb.
- The Sarumarine's name comes from the Japanese word saru ("monkey," written 猿 in Kanji, さる in Hiragana, and サル in Katakana) and "submarine."
