~ Satan singing about how powerless Stolas and Blitzø are compared to him. |
Satan is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Paimon) of the adult animated black comedy web-series Helluva Boss.
The Deadly Sin of Wrath, Satan is the ruler of the Ring of Wrath and the second-in-command of the Seven Deadly Sins. He is also the judge of Hell, who has unofficially taken charge of Hell in Lucifer's absence. Satan is an elitist who created the imp species to be obedient slaves to higher class demons and will kill any imp who steps out of line, which lead to him coming into conflict with I.M.P and Stolas after Andrealphus revealed the former was illegally using Stolas' Grimoire to conduct their business and go the living world.
He is voiced by Patrick Page, who also portrayed Norman Osborn in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the Grinch in the short film of the same name, Judge Claude Frollo in the musical adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mr. Greentoes in Moville Mysteries, Hades in Hadestown and Calvin Huntley in Chicago P.D.
Appearance[]
Satan is a huge, orange-skinned dragon with lighter orange and red streaks running down both his arms and wings similar to flows of lava. He has a lighter orange underbelly, darker orange patterns on his tail, with cream colored neural spines on his tail and cream claws. He has four yellow eyes, dark red stripes on his neck, a dark red patch on his head and two pairs of horns, one with an alternating black and white coloration (similar to a male imp's horns) and another pair with black and red instead. He has a dark red mark on his chest as well, with his tail having a gradient into darker red as it ends in an arrow shape. The spines on Satan's neck are black in color.
For clothing, Satan wears a tattered black jacket with tassels and a red collar. He also has two buttons on his collar that when linked with a black cord, resemble a pair of dumbbells. He wears a dark grey shirt inside, a belt with a golden skull, black pants and boots.
Personality[]
Despite being the Sin of Wrath, Satan is a surprisingly calm individual. He speaks in an intimidating, but calm voice that shows his authority, and while he can lose his temper, he has a ward to calm him down and seemingly practices meditation to work on his anger issues. During the trial against I.M.P., Satan shows himself to be an elitist who created imps to serve other demons, executes any imps that try to break out, wants to keep them all in place and lets Stolas live because, as royalty, his life actually matters. Satan is uncaring and unmotivated to do his job as Hell's judge, being interested in ending the trial as soon as possible. He is additionally egotistical, proudly proclaiming that he’s "The Mastermind" whose plans outdo anything anyone else can do, and in Lucifer's absence has went on to spread lies about being Hell's original ruler before the angel's fall. It is also in times like these where Satan showcases his wrathful side, interpreting Blitzø defending his friends as him questioning his authority.
Satan does have some restrictions on his punishments, such as not killing Stolas because he’s of royalty, although this was again just so he could be done with the problem. He does, however, let Moxxie, Millie, and Loona go when Blitzo reveals that they were simply doing their job and lets Blitzo go when convinced he was a pawn, implying that he does have an honorable side. He also shows a more lighthearted side to him once the court case is over and happily declares it's lunchtime, though this could just be his indifference to the case as he initially believed it to be of no big deal considering it was dealing with an imp. Satan also does seem somewhat accepting as he actually listens to his Baphomet assistant's advice on calming down, displaying that he does acknowledge his anger issues and is trying to combat them.
History[]
After being mentioned several times, Satan first appears in "Mastermind" when Andrealphus sets up a trial against I.M.P. for "stealing" Stolas' grimoire. The four is faced towards trial, with Satan acting as the judge while the other Deadly Sins and the Ars Goetia watch. When Blitzo Buckzo tries to defend himself, Andrealphus enters the situation and lies that Blitzo not only stole the grimoire from Stolas, but also raped him to keep him in place despite their arrangement being completely mutual. A fellow Goetia demon, Vassago, tries to argue that Stolas needs to come here himself if this trial involves him, but Andrealphus claims he and his sister don't want to make him face his abuser. Andrealphus adds on that Blitzo apparently wanted Stolas assassinated, and has Striker back up (despite Striker actually working on Stella's orders).
Two of the Deadly Sins - Beelzebub and Asmodeus - try to defend Blitzo due to knowing him personally, but Mammon sides against them due to knowing that, unlike the other Sins, they're friendly with "lower-class plebs". Impatient, Satan asks who wants to spend hours listening to testimonies, with only I.M.P and the two aforementioned Sins agreeing; meanwhile, everyone else agrees to just kill Blitzo so they can get over with it. With the vote cast, Satan decided to execute Blitzo, but agrees to let Moxxie, Millie and Loona go as they didn't actually do anything besides work with Blitzo; he tries to have his execution broadcasted across all of Hell to teach all imps a lesson to not mess with royalty.
However, this only results in Stolas seeing Blitzo's execution on TV. He saves him and, in a song number, frames himself as the mastermind who orchestrated everything and was Blitzo's boss. Satan buys it, and responds with his own verse, where he portrays himself as his own type of mastermind; the law of Hell, and its original ruler before Lucifer's fall (though Asmodeus and Bee's reactions make it clear he's lying since Lucifer isn't really coming back). As the biggest fish in pond, Satan calls Stolas a disgrace and prepares to punish him; after sending I.M.P. outside the court case, Stolas lies down and prepares to be beheaded... to Satan's confusion. He explains that, since Stolas is royalty and not common folk, "[his] life has actual worth" and decides a different punishment for him; he strips Stolas of all his power, both political and physical, reducing him to a common citizen for the following century. With the case over, everyone leaves, with Satan cheerily declaring it lunch time.

Trivia[]
- According to the "Satan's Workouts" app on Blitzo's phone and the jacket Satan wears, he has an interest in weightlifting.
- According to him, he created imps purely for them to be subservient. This essentially makes him the progenitor of all imps including Blitzo as well being the primary reason why all imps are looked down upon in Hell’s society.
- Due to him creating the imps to be a servant race, Satan could also be considered the one responsible for Hell’s caste system as a whole as Lucifer was too depressed to do anything after being banished from Heaven while Heaven’s elite couldn't care less about what happens in Hell. If so, then it would make him indirectly responsible for the actions of the Overlords and most other Demons.
- Satan proclaiming he ruled Hell before Lucifer's fall caused a lot of confusion in the fanbase, causing series creator Vivziepop to explain that he was lying, and in Lucifer's absence he decided to "say whatever he wants".
- This seems to suggest that thanks to Lucifer being a reclusive and socially inept ruler, Satan is currently the de-facto ruler of Hell, hence why he takes on all of the court cases.
- He speaks with a Southern American accent, much like those who live in the Wrath Ring, which he rules over.
- A running gag on the show is Blitzo insisting that the "O" in his name is silent; for obvious reasons, Blitzo does not correct Satan when he mispronounces it.
- Of all the Deadly Sins, his appearance most resembles that of a traditional depiction of the Devil.
