Satan (also known as Lucifer) is the overarching antagonist of the Hellraiser literary continuity, consisting of the first film script volume entitled Hellraiser: A Film By Clive Barker and the novels Scarlet Gospels and Hellraiser: The Toll, written by Clive Barker and by Mark Alan Miller. He is a representation of the Christian Devil and is the undisputed ruler of Hell. He replaces the Leviathan from the film timeline and the Engineer from the novel continuity Hellbound Heart, who do not exist in this continuity. He is described as a handsome-looking man, with a much taller and statuesque body than that of an ordinary man, with an aquiline nose, blue eyes, and short, curly blond hair.
History[]
Satan in the novel is described as suffering from a severe form of depression for having been denied by God and for his immortal condition. For this reason, in order to reach a state similar to death, he has himself impaled on his throne by a series of spears, then having his palace sealed. His disappearance, in the years to come, will precede the birth of a thriving demonic civilization.
Satan becomes the target of the Hell Priest, who wishes to hold an audience with him to experience a spiritual revelation. Arrived in the presence of Satan, the Hell Priest strips his body of his armor and puts it on, usurping the throne of the Devil and proclaiming himself the new king of Hell. However such action causes Satan to awaken from his state of apparent death and he, enraged at having to once again endure an existence apart from God, engages in a furious battle with the Hell Priest. Although deprived of his armor, Satan manages to win by tearing open the stomach of the Hell Priest and reducing him to the point of life after having extracted his entrails. After defeating the usurper, Satan announces his intention to destroy Hell and, by telekinesis raising the Quo'Oto - a monstrous aquatic creature similar to a titanic centipede that infests the waters of the lake in front of his palace - he uses the his gigantic body to shatter the stone roof of Hell, causing total devastation. Once this is done, Satan flees to Earth and arrives in New York, determined to make a name for himself, and will enter into a relationship with a mortal woman.
Trivia[]
- This version of Satan is certainly one of the most tragic, as he is so devastated by his abandonment by God and by his condition of immortality that he wishes to die and attempts a sort of euthanasia which, not being able to die, will guarantee him a perennial comatose state. Unlike other versions, he also proves to be less evil and mischievous, especially when compared to the much more evil, ruthless and ambitious Hell Priest.
